They call it cloud computing because they run it on big shitty methane generators that create a “cloud” of smoke in poor neighborhoods.

Hyperscalers are building data centers while leveraging billions in debt, assuming an insatiable demand for computing. @edzitron.com, CEO of EZ Primary Research, thinks the gamble is shortsighted.

tangential thread of support for everything contained within here.

From 2014 to 2019 I fought a long protracted battle in business computing tech about what is “scientific computing” and what is “unethical test and learn” feature driven development.
Why are mathematicians doing the hard work of cleaning up the mess created by slop machines?

Cheap, efficient open-weight models are gonna re-write a lot of AI narratives. So will edge-computing hardware advances.

The AI giant must convince investors it can maintain rapid growth amid fierce competition while managing billions in computing costs. Bloomberg breaks down the numbers.

This is some creative computing
So, I created a complete Commodore 64 emulator inside Bluesky chat just by @'ing the bot @bskyplays.bsky.social.

It runs the full 6502 CPU and the C64's BASIC interpreter, rendering the screen into your chat.

The device state is stored in a hidden ATProto blob in the post. And you can do ...
@chadloder.dev Every frame here is drawn from the C64's own character ROM, in Pepto's measured PAL colors. Reply with BASIC. RESET reboots.

Computing is a moral activity, and we must take responsibility for its creation and the consequences of surrendering ourselves to it.

This thread is a great list of retro computing and gaming history folks to follow.
Had the privilege this week to present at the Save the Games symposium at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY!

I met so many wonderful people, reconnected with many others, and saw some brilliant presentations.

biological computing
It just bounced around like a Brownian state machine seeking a lower energy state. Every call checked random predicates on self before (usually) handing off to another method. Obvious "bugs" were load bearing parts of the control flow, since it expected to first process the data incorrectly.
