#Kintsugi-Artist
Good morning. We woke up today thinking of the Japanese art of kitsugi, repairing broken pottery with gold, not to hide the flaws, but to turn them into something beautiful.

Our country has broken in many ways. Let’s be the gold that mends the cracks.

The first person to practice kintsugi in NY was my urushi colleague, the maki-e artist Saratani. He did kintsugi work at the request of NY ceramics dealers, but his main profession was maki-e. Originally, kintsugi derived from maki-e, so it's something that maki-e artists can do easily.

Sometimes porceline breaks in the kiln. According to the ancient Japanese tradition “Kintsugi” an artist should emphasize their imperfections with gold! Here’s our new Kintsugi Cocksucker plate, embellished with gold. 🌟🌟🌟

I listened to a talk by a Japanese kintsugi artist based in Toronto, and it was incredibly insightful.
What feels “natural” to us in Japan doesn’t always translate abroad—so we need to explain the cultural context carefully.
The same goes for kintsugi😊

Really dig Yuko Gunji, a kintsugi artist in NYC. Kintsugi is the Japanese method of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. Instead of trying to make things look new again, it highlights the faults, showing how something can be beautiful even after it was broken.

Kintsugi is a technique for repairing accidentally broken objects. It's not about creating pottery from scratch, intentionally breaking it, and then repairing it. Moreover, I can't imagine giving such a thing as a present.

There's an incredible ceramic restoration artist I admire. A documentary featuring their work was broadcast recently. They can perfectly restore damaged masterpieces to their original state without using kintsugi techniques. While kintsugi is widely celebrated,

And since I've been getting some comments suggesting kintsugi I'll say this again:

I'm not comfortable using this technique in my own work as a white artist, there is already too much we've taken from other cultures. I'm happy to leave that to those with more of a connection to it!

The picture on the right is from an artist named Rob Strati- It's from his "Fragmented" series. I really like his style.
Anyone who knows me, knows I love a japanese art form called "Kintsugi" (left pic)- making repairs beautiful.
I'd like to combine the two. Art fusion. 😍
