Another find in Kīpuka Pu‘u Huluhulu Native Tree Sanctuary, this is a native Hawaiian poppy, Pua Kala (Argemone glauca -Var. decipiens), which is unusual for a Hawaiian endemic in that it is SPIKY. Now-extinct geese may have been responsible, I'll look into it. :) #plants #flowers #botany #hawaii

This is a kipuka. When lava flows spare an area by flowing around it, the resulting “island” in the lava is called a kipuka. You can literally step from bare lava into a rainforest full of native birds and native flora in a single footstep. Mauna Loa / Mauna Kea saddle. Hawaii.

Am stoked to be working on a film/ commercial concept with Kīpuka Kuleana on Kauaʻi as they work towards the launch of the Hōʻahu Land Tax, a voluntary tax to be paid by visitors & settlers who travel to the island, in acknowledgment of the ongoing occupation & seize of land. Fundshifting builds ea.

I had a professor in my undergrad that studied wild fruit fly (Drosophila silvestris) genetic divergence in the kipukas (islands surrounded by old lava flows) of Hawaii.
That seems preferable to studying Antarctic midges, as field work experiences go.
