What is knowledge engineering? Ontologies are once again hot because they are key to succeed with AI - ontologies provide context for AI, so these perform better. But: In the current AI hype, some promote establishing a new type of engineer, a “knowledge engineer” to help the construction of ontologies - and others have warned against introducing such an engineer. Both these positions are wrong. Knowledge engineering is not something new. The term "knowledge engineer" appears in the scientific literature already 1977 as part of the Stanford Heuristic Programming Project: “The knowledge engineer practices the art of bringing the principles and tools of AI research to bear on difficult applications problems requiring experts’ knowledge for their solution. The technical issues of acquiring the knowledge, representing it, and using it appropriately to construct and explain lines-of-reasoning, are important problems in the design of knowledge-based systems“ (1) and, just like today, the idea is that: “The acquisition of expert knowledge is fundamental to the creation of expert systems.” (2) Several experts are claiming knowledge engineering as a new concept, but it’s a false premise for a correct aspiration. We need knowledge engineers, but it’s not a new concept. The notion of Knowledge Engineering survived the AI winter and never stopped being actively discussed in Computer Science as well as Library- and Information Science. (3) And knowledge engineers are facing a great future. An encouragement: To push forward, faster, in experimenting with and refining AI for performing expert tasks in agentic architectures, we cannot ignore the fundamentals. We cannot lose time reinventing what already exists. True expertise requires that we build on established knowledge. Just like for AI itself. Some questions: How do delineate between knowledge engineers and ontologists? Where should the knowledge engineer sit, in the organization? What is the future of knowledge engineering - To what extent is AI making the knowledge engineer redundant? Ramona C.
