Empress Kōjun, 1920s, Japan. In 1927, 1929 and 1931 the Empress gave birth to three girls in succession and many began to worry if a son and heir would be forthcoming.
Empress Kōjun (1903–2000)—then Princess Nagako—during the 1920s, a transformative and highly pressurized decade of her early royal life. Married to Crown Prince Hirohito (the future Emperor Shōwa) in January 1924, she is depicted here wearing an elegant, light-colored Western-style dress featuring a clean, tailored lapel and a delicate multi-stranded pearl necklace. Her ensemble is crowned by an oversized, wide-brimmed picture hat adorned with a voluminous fringe of soft feathers, reflecting the cosmopolitan Taishō Roman fashion trends that swept through Japan's high society during this era. She poses in a three-quarter profile against a stark, deep black background, her calm and youthful expression carrying a subtle, contemplative gravity. Behind the serene facade of this European-influenced portrait lay immense systemic and political anxiety regarding the future of the Imperial line. Following Hirohito's ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne in late 1926, the young Empress faced extraordinary societal pressure to secure the succession, which by law strictly mandated a male heir. In quick succession, Empress Kōjun gave birth to three daughters: Princess Shigeko in 1925, Princess Sachiko in 1927 (who tragically died in infancy), and Princess Kazuko in 1929. When a fourth daughter, Princess Atsuko, arrived in 1931, deep concern rippled through the imperial court and public sphere alike over the lack of a crown prince.

Aviomies löysi torilta persujen kojun, otti makkaran ja piti kymmenen minuutin esitelmän, miten Persut on pettäneet äänestäjänsä ja koko Suomen.
Kävi ilmi, että hra persu ei lainkaan tiennyt esim suojaosuuden poistosta, mutta häneltä ei "ainakaan ole eläkkeestä leikattu".

The photograph offers a fascinating case study in the rapid Westernization of the Japanese elite's material culture and childhood dress during the late Meiji and early Taishō eras. Standing before a soft, painted landscape backdrop that depicts a hazy forest, the three sisters are arranged by height, showcasing the tailored European-style fashions that had become mandatory for members of the imperial court on public and semi-formal occasions. While the kanji for their names can support alternative readings, court records traditionally identify the sisters from left to right as Princess Satoko (智子), Princess Nobuko (信子), and the eldest, Princess Nagako (良子). Princess Nagako, seen on the far right standing tallest with her long hair adorned with side bows, would later enter into a historic union with Crown Prince Hirohito (the Shōwa Emperor), ascending to become Empress Kōjun and anchoring the imperial household through the twentieth century. Her youngest sister, Satoko, standing on the far left, would eventually marry into the Buddhist nobility as the wife of Ōtani Kōchō, the Chief Abbot of the Higashi Hongan-ji temple. The wardrobe worn by the princesses is an exceptional testament to the high-status textile imports and sartorial protocols of the era. Each girl is dressed in an identical, dark velvet or heavy wool mid-calf dress tailored with a distinct Western silhouette, featuring long sleeves, structured waistbands, and dark stockings with buttoned leather shoes. The dark fabric is punctuated by a stark, matching white yoke and collar treatment decorated with a sharp, zigzag geometric border and an embroidered chevron pattern down the chest. Their hair is styled in a hybrid fashion, combining traditional straight-cut bangs (okappa) with long, flowing locks tied with Western silk ribbons.

Kazuo Miyagawa served as cinematographer for the film, replacing Ozu's favorite cameraman, Yuharu Atsuta. In an interview, Ozu described the film as an experiment on how to bring life to an old fashioned story in a modern setting and noted that by working with Miyagawa, he realized that different colors required varying degrees of lighting. “floating weeds” is a Japanese term for itinerant (touring) actors.. “The movie’s music, by Kojun Saito, is lilting and nostalgic. For some reason it always reminds me of the music in “Mr. Hulot's Holiday”; both soundtracks evoke the feeling of summer in a village near the sea, where the heat and the quiet have created a kind of dreamy suspension of the rules.” - Roger Ebert.. “I have formulated my own directing style in my head,” Ozu once said, “proceeding without any unnecessary imitation of others.”

Day 8: Standout Secondary Character of 2025

I could not decide between 2 dramas. I loved watching #ChooYoungWoo in #MercyforNone. He had quite the year in 2025 & was a great villain. Also have to shout out to #LeeHoYoung and #KoJun in #GoodBoy. They were so much more than just villains. #EYDC2025
