What Kochi's wildlife sightings tell us about a changing ecology
They come here every day to visit us with their babies,” says Sister Mini of the Congregation of Cottolengo Sisters in Fort Kochi. Sister Mini has been seeing peafowl in the area for the past few years. The flock has now grown comfortable around the nuns. “A priest from the nearby Bishop’s House feeds them every day. He has kept a separate sack of rice grain just for the birds. Many others contribute too,” she says. The birds have become so friendly with the nuns that they even let them hold their young ones. “There are around six adult birds, of which two are peacocks. Then there are four peachicks,” she says with a smile. Sister Mini, however, does not remember when the peafowl first arrived in Kochi. Former mayor and historian K J Sohan says he has been seeing these birds in the Fort Kochi area for at least three years. “I don’t know where they came from. They have now made a home here. Not just the peacock, there are monkeys too — an Indian macaque and a brown one, which I have not been able to identify yet,” he adds. “Then there are pythons. People once feared...

India on e-wheels: Kochi's electric experiment offers a blueprint for Kerala's EV transition
The most interesting electric vehicle (EV) experiment in Kerala may not be happening in a car showroom or at a charging station. It is taking shape on Kochi’s streets, where electric buses are being used to solve one of urban transport’s oldest problems: connecting people from their homes and workplaces to mass transit. Through Metro Connect, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has created an all-electric feeder network linking neighbourhoods and important destinations with the Metro and Water Metro. Launched in January 2025 with 15 air-conditioned, 33-seater electric buses, the service carried about 1.4 million passengers in its first year. The fleet operates across six routes, covers around 2,300 kilometres a day and has travelled nearly 0.7 million kilometres. What makes the experiment significant is that the buses are not isolated EVs. They are part of a wider public transport system. The objective is to make the Metro and Water Metro more accessible by solving the first- and last-mile problem while replacing conventional feeder vehicles with electric buses. For Kerala, that is an important shift. The question is not simply how many EVs can be put on the roads. It is whether electrification can help create a public transport system capable...

Kochi takes sweet potato, cuts it into batons, fries them, then glazes them in hard sugar until they snap like brittle. It's called imo kenpi. Candy, or snack? We genuinely can't decide.

Imoya Kinjiro Imo Kenpi (芋屋金次郎 芋けんぴ, boxed sweet-potato sticks) — Kochi's sugar-glazed fried tuber snack from a specialist confectioner [2026 Guide for International Readers] - Japanモノ-mono-
Imo kenpi is one of Kochi Prefecture's most recognizable everyday sweets: batons of local sweet potato deep-fried and lacquered in a hard sugar glaze until they snap like brittle. Shikoku's warm climate and volcanic soils have long favored the naga-imo and Beniharuka sweet potatoes at the heart of the recipe, and Kochi cooks turned a humble root crop into a crisp, keepable confection long before refrigeration reached rural kitchens. Imoya Kinjiro, a maker devoted almost entirely to kenpi, presses and fries its sticks in small batches and finishes them so the sugar sets glassy rather than sticky. Because the potato is fully fried and sugar-sealed, the result is dry, dense, and shelf-stable — it does not melt, weep, or spoil quickly, which is exactly why it travels well by post. For international readers, that combination of a named regional specialist, a purely plant-based ingredient list, and a sealed, room-temperature format makes it one of the more forgiving Japanese sweets to order
