Good morning from Japan, where my son and I have been traveling the past two weeks. We landed in Tokyo amid 102.4-degree heat (39.1°C), which almost made it kokushobi or a “cruelly hot day”—a designation introduced in April to warn the public when temperatures rise above 40 degrees Celsius. There’s also the torrential rainfall this summer, including last week’s historic downpour in Chiba Prefecture that stranded travelers, disrupted power, and killed at least 8 people.

#Climate change keeps teaching me new words.
In Japan, the new word for "cruelly hot" is kokushobi.
Today's new word is phragmite, an invasive reed that outcompetes native Canadian phragmites, bullrushes, & cattails, and destroys wildlife habitats.

In Japan, temperatures reached 40C and the country recorded its first ever “kokushobi”, or “cruelly hot day”, a new category introduced this year by the country’s weather agency for temperatures above 40C.

In CATALONIA it would just be a mere 2 over 6 and not even a heatwave!

Japan already had names for 25°C, 30°C and 35°C days. In 2026, 40°C got one too: kokushobi (酷暑日).

A new word in an ordinary weather forecast says quite a lot about how Japanese summers are changing.
