Passing through the Swiss Alps by means of the #Lötschberg tunnel car-carrying train earlier today. The #BLS Re4/4 in their classic brown livery, lined up at #Kandersteg yard, used to be the main work horses on the line for many years.

The Northern portal of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel is here, used primarily by Intercity and EuroCity traffic travelling from Bern to Brig or Italy. BLS regional trains like this one however take the longer yet more scenic Lötschberg Line, the original route prior to 2007… 🇨🇭

Good Morning from the #SBB🇨🇭#elvetino #DiningCar on this #InterCity from #Basel to #Brig via #Bern, #Spiez and the #Lötschberg base tunnel. #Breakfast as we catch a glimpse of Lake Thunersee.

In most places, cars and freeways have erased trains and tracks. In #Switzlerland, trains are so ubiquitous they've found a way to absorb cars.

Case in point: To get through the Lötschberg Tunnel, drivers roll right on to open-sided railway cars, + stay inside their vehicles for the 20-mn ride.

Good morning from a very sunny Brig! 🇨🇭

I’ve arrived on MGB from my hotel in Mörel and just noticed a nice old departure board on these platforms
Now I’ve got a pendolino taking me north through the Lötschberg base tunnel towards Bern 😁

Good morning from the #SBB🇨🇭#elvetino @diningcar.at Enjoying a (late, second) breakfast ☕️🥐 in the #Bistro section. It is located at the lower deck of this #IC2000 double-deck car as we speed at 200kph through the #Lötschberg base tunnel.

On the #Lötschberg🇨🇭 tunnel car-carrying train from #Goppenstein to #Kandersteg. (There’s no road tunnel up here.) In front of us: a sheep trailer marked “Tiertransport” - and you can hear their baa and meh. They’re going home after having spent the summer in the #Valais Alps. 🐏🐑😊

We're in Switzerland now as well. Today we drove our car onto a railway car to travel the Lotschberg tunnel. Very cool!

BLS is upgrading the Lötschberg Base Tunnel
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is the centrepiece of the BLS infrastructure and a central element of the NRLA, the New Rail Link through the Alps. BLS upgrades the Tunnel.

Harking back to Leukerbad, when the new Lötschberg base tunnel was being built through the same massif as its waters percolate through, more hot water was discovered. So they use it to heat glasshouses and grow mangos (etc) in well-named Frutigen. #FinalProblem2024

The main reason this diligence/bus still exists, is that when the classic Lötschberg railway was the main line, they closed the stations between Kandersteg and Frutigen to release capacity for expresses and freight. Despite the base tunnel, they’ve not reopened. #FinalProblem2024

The only other route, before the Lötschberg tunnel opened, would have been a 200km diversion via Lausanne. So since the 15th century, travellers - including the first Thomas Cook Swiss holiday - have climbed a twisting, treacherous path up that rock face. #FinalProblem2024

From Spiez the train went through the 15km long Lötschberg tunnel to Visp, where I had a rather too close for comfort connection.
The scenery has become even more dramatic, the weather even sunnier and, as we climb, more snow on the ground.

Kandersteg is now best known as where cars are loaded onto trains to travel through the Lötschberg tunnel - there’s still no road to the Valais. The railway was 24yrs away when Holmes passed here, but Kandersteg was undergoing a tourist boom of Gemmi travellers. #FinalProblem2024

Today, an avalanche cut off railway and road to the Lötschental. www.lenouvelliste.ch/valais/haut-...
Avalanche: le Lötschental coupé du trafic
Une avalanche a coupé l’entrée du Lötschental, peu après le tunnel routier du Lötschberg. Le trafic est interrompu au moins jusqu’au début de la soirée.

Ooh, I've done that through the Lötschberg tunnel in that Switzerland.

From the diagrams, it looks like all mountain crossings/tunnels will be single track .
The en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%B6... actually was built as partially single track, with a parallel rescue tunnel for single track sections.
So it is definitely possible to double track this in the future.

Random thoughts about infrastructure:

How long to complete the EIR for the deep tunnel sewer systems in Chicago and Milwaukee?

How Swiss deal with EIR for Gotthard Base Tunnel and Lötschberg Base Tunnel?
