When I moved to Manchester from Sydney years ago, I knew no one and I found community in Rainbow Noir. Rainbow Noir creates spaces for LGBTIQ+ people of colour which recognises how our lives are interconnected. So we marched at Manchester Pride to affirm the humanity of everyone facing persecution.

OUTPatients is a Consortium member and the UK’s LGBTIQ+ cancer charity. They provide support, influence policy and work to ensure that LGBTIQ+ people do not face cancer alone. This month is a chance to challenge harmful ideas about queer bodies and promote truly inclusive spaces.

From running peer support groups, to educating healthcare professionals, to shaping national policy, we work to ensure that no LGBTIQ+ person has to go through cancer alone, or receive worse care because of who they are. What does Disability Pride Month mean to you? Following a cancer diagnosis, LGBTIQ+ people face more than just physical health problems. We can face barriers, stigma, and shame, not only from the wider world, but from within the queer community itself. Disability Pride Month is therefore an opportunity for us to challenge narrow ideas of what queer bodies and lives are “supposed” to be like. It is a time for us to assert our right to be here, and to demand that LGBTIQ+ spaces are open and accessible to us all. Some of our resources are relevant for all LGBTIQ+ people, whether you have had cancer or not. The lesbian TERFS also openly slandered trans women by implying that they are responsible for ‘horrendous sexual harassment’ of young lesbians in LGBTIQ+ spaces. I reckon that sort of claim needs to be backed up by some research, personally, or it should be considered hate speech and incitement.
