🎶When I'm dancing with you
Tomorrow doesn't matter
Turn that music up
'Till the windows start to shatter
'Cause you're the only one who can get me on my feet And I can't even dance🎶

This should have been soooooo much bigger:

One reason for increased diagnosis: they let girls in. Based on 20 years of data.

Not to take away from your points about ADHD & being trans also getting dismissed. Just putting that out there because it’s a pet peeve.

I’m old enough to remember when you couldn’t be diagnosed if you were a girl, unless there was a concomitant intellectual disability —that was a de facto exclusionary criterion back in the day.

That didn’t really start changing until the 2000s.
RFK Jr on autism: "'Oh, we're just noticing it more.' But this is an absurdity ... if we were just noticing it more, we would notice it in older groups. But we're not ... so something happened in the mid '90s that changed our children"

Would this be an appropriate way to think about it?

Saw a good paper explaining sandboxing (the Open AI/Hugging Face thing). It was helpful, but it put me off a bit when terminology was used that sounded like they were attributing sentience.

Rather than figuring anything out, could we conceptualize it more like water, where it seeks out gaps?

Related! Old school writing things on paper is the best way to get things to stick, for sure.

Been working on a project for a while that’s finally in a state to share!

For kids or adults, L1 or L2. Done with dyslexia intervention in mind, but good for everyone!

YouTube video for modeling/free worksheets for trace-copy-cover.

Was thinking about this earlier —classic, & it covers pragmatics.

Kicking it old school with Bloom & Lahey (1978).

Form. Content. Use.

You need to consider all three when talking about language.

I was reading this last night & it very much relates to this article. The words people choose to describe events also reflect their worldview, with the court describing events in the same way as the accused.

“Describing involves selecting what matters, & what matters always tells us more than we now see. Description is not meant to record all that is before us. In fact it records very little of it—just enough to bring into use a conceptual scheme that tells us enormously more.” —Mary Midgley

Watching today. Interesting timing to read your thread.

Watching The Principles of Pleasure on Netflix (excellent program about something that is seldom covered this openly & positively, women’s sexuality), & they’re defining the word ‘consent’.

This is an important word to be able to define & discuss.

Was reading “You can’t play 20 questions with nature” yesterday, & somewhat related. (It ended up being 2 posts due to length of the quote.)

Tangentially related (thank you for saying what you did —made me think!): try not to get stuck in thinking a thing has to be used in a certain way.

Prescribed uses can be a form of prejudice.

Successfully turned the bottom of a shift dress where I loved the fabric but hated the fit into a shirt.

Still need to sew up a few edges so it’s a bit more finished, but otherwise, good to go. 👍

It was one of those things I guess we all have to try at some point in our lives when we’re young & naive.

bsky.app/profile/llml...
I gave it a week or so. It is most definitely not for me.

Was just thinking about a related problem in educational research —a bit of a tangent. If you’re in the field, it’s long been assumed that what you have to say isn’t based on the same kind of rigor as ends up in journals.

I’d imagine it’s the same in some other fields.

Even when it’s free —perhaps especially because it’s free.

Less respect afforded to what’s been created & the knowledge base of the creators.

At worst, we all end up recreating the wheel over & over when there’s nothing commercially available or what is available doesn’t work.

I’m doing this to try in a little way to make it easier. It is worksheets (sort of) & screen time (kinda), but it’s being done with certain principles in mind. Trick learned through Orton-Gillingham, plus working with OTs for a really long time.

I’m nearly finished with a very simple animation that I plan on putting up on YouTube with supplemental worksheets (letter size & A4) in case they’re needed. Print lowercase & uppercase. It addresses directionality.

It’ll be free. That’s the plan. Almost finished.
Incorporating handwriting lessons can have numerous benefits for older students! Here’s how to get them started. ✍️

Trying to go back to literacy basics with as little AI as I can & to make it as accessible as I can. Is it necessary? I think so.

Part of growing up is uncomfortable conversations. No one wants to deal with them, but it’s an important part of maturing. It’s a shame to take that away from kids.

Day 4.

The Communication Bill of Rights includes:

4. The right to receive a response to all communication, even when the desired outcome is not possible.

Clarity, honesty, & presence are vital in communication. Hard conversations may be part of that. We all deserve respect.
