#LOEG
Van Helsing is so much fun! And you know what? While I’m hot and cold on the LoEG adaptation, it’s a perfect in-universe prequel/spin-off.

A lot to keep up with but we got a lot of cool narrative beats out of it and it did a reasonable job of simulating that LoEG-ish Victorian Incredible Hulk sort of Jekyll and Hyde vibe we were going for.

(And yes, both personas were an absolute mess, in case that doesn't go without saying, lmao)

That tracks. I stopped reading LoEG after Hyde sodomized the invisible man. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thinking about reading this one since that LoEG volume however many years ago, no time like the present

I watched a few after it was referenced in a LoEG sequel and always meant to go back.

This is something I would definitely read, love the Wells novel & ACD.

Without wanting to pick at a scab; there has always been speculation about sources, inspirations and appropriations - do you think this was one for LOEG?! There was already a precedent for Holmes mash-ups with A Study In Terror.

I definitely need to read some old pulp & sci-fi. The stuff LoEG draws from, and Frankenstein. I've only experienced interpretations of all these stories, characters, and ideas. I'm going to dig deeper soon.

...I'll try a re-read of LoEG after that.
September 13, 2026 at 12:39 AM
I think if you were a bit more steeped in the genres and references that the LOEG comic was building upon, you really would appreciate it more. I'm a great fan of anything pulpy, and every time I give it a fresh read I know more of the references than I did the last time.
September 13, 2026 at 12:30 AM
It's a very different beast from the comic, but I was okay with that, since I didn't like the comic that much. I liked Moore's ideas better than his execution on LoEG... most of his stuff, actually. What the movie chose to do instead, the shallower thing, it did better than it was given credit for.

I finally remembered to import my 2022 LoEG review from T̶w̶i̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ X to BlueSky, thanks to this t̶w̶e̶e̶t̶ post:

I love this film (and the comics) before and I do not care what you think about that!

9 Sept: The holy maidens of Enach Lóeg/ #Annaleck near Thomastown, Co. #Kilkenny (Prof Elva Johnston). 5th C? 9 daughters of Lombard king (Colgan)? Said to have travelled to Ferta minor where they met St Patrick!? May be no grounds for this. 📷©my screenshot - Google Instant Street View #medievalsky

Still, if I ever do a LoEG “Mina Murray in the Multiverse of Madness” fanfic the team would consist of her LXG movie self, Lucy from the Werner Herzog NOSFERATU (portrayed as two twins, one English-speaking and one German-speaking), Lucy from A VISIT FROM THE INCUBUS, and Aurora from this movie.
I expected DRACULA 3000 to be badly written and I expected DRACULA 3000 to have bad special effects but the relentless racist, sexist and ableist jokes were a surprise.

The key is to know Irish Mythology, as The Vietnamese Bean of Death does

She became my Láeg
Her twin became Lóeg

Either way
They push the buttons that need to be pushed
And away we go

I still have all the kids books from my younger days as a parent. Church Mice, Frog & Toad! 🩷And I respect the graphic novel field especially! I loved the LOEG Nemo stories and Persepolis. Black Orchid was lovely (though Neil Gaiman argh) and I thought Watchmen was pretty good!

You know what? I still mostly stand by this Favorite Character Bingo. Satania and LoEG Mina and mmmaaaaybe Bayo need to be swapped out, but this is still a solid list.

All the character did was drag down the general view of the LOEG series itself, for no real gain there. Honestly if Moore wanted to address that, something like this (which I read as a kid!) would've been more interesting and has better potential for nuance, imo en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sto...

Still not sure what Alan Moore saw in the character that he thought to try and "reclaim" him in LOEG.

Reasons I loved VB and @jessnevins.bsky.social annotating of the LoEG series when it originally came out.

He’s down there, a new god who has found a calling. He holds up that Snitch and bellows: “I am a beautiful animal! I am a destroyer of worlds! I am [the antichrist]!” And, dear readers, at last the world was quiet.

While I have critique of the delivery if that part of LoEG and Alan's own... Attachments to Englishness, he's not wrong

Mina is pretty much THE central character in LoEG. Interesting that Moore seems to have only picked her as the “least bad” choice. I wonder who else he considered for that slot. Irene Adler maybe?
