RRC and the <> recon platoons are much more like traditional LRRPs; sneak around enemy rear areas and direct fires as appropriate, then run like hell when you eventually get detected. They also picked up a plainclothes urban reconnaissance role over GWOT but that's way more limited than it sounds

Here are all of the books I rated 5 stars this year. The best of the best! This is in order that I read them and it's interesting that 1st Cav LRRPs in Vietnam started and ended the year!
Just looking at these covers, there is just so much to say about all of these and they're absolute must-reads!

The second book has some addition authors commentary, and a few extra stories, but it's 99% the same book as the first. My review: 3 stars for both, and only read/skim them if you've read all the other books on 1st CAV LRRPS so you know who's who and what's what, and the stories already.

Thanks. He’s a F/51 LRRP, not a Batt guy. Same concept except LRRPs are sneakier and less stabby due to their small size. Not sure who F/51st falls under anymore. That’s a badass field soldier.

There were Australian Military Forces troops serving near the 9th Division that they swapped kit with a lot, especially the LRRPs who were allowed looser uniform regulations.
And he was an advisor to the Royal Thai Army, thus all the Thai stuff.

different than the normal fair from Ivy and Palladin inasmuch as it went with both breadth and depth of experiences, not just LRRPs and SEALs, and it's angle tended to be almost caring of the subjects instead of trying to showcase them all as damaged drug addicts or rambos...

I read about RT Kansas, where the 6 guys in the radio relay team were surprised and basically executed. If you were bored with the LRRPs you could have volunteered for SOG,and gotten sheep dipped.

Oh yeah, the LRRPs especially (Long range recon patrol) tended to be “lean and mean”, as they said. Basically the body types that you see running endurance races like the Western States 100.

Growing up in Kalimpong is not the same thing as growing up in Lhasa. The effectiveness of the LRRPs began to decline & even with the 1987 revolts in Tibet - this did not improve for long. A crisis was clearly brewing & something had to be done.

Throughout this period LRRPs into Tibet under Est 22 support continued but it became clearer than the children of the original tribes who were born in India - could not possibly be expected to fill their parents shoes.

In the 80s things began to change with leaders like DIB Phatak sensing the rising Islamist threat in Pakistan & increased concerns about the long term viability of Est 22 ability to maintain surveillance on PLARF in Tibet via LRRPs.

MACVSOG is one of those groups, like the LRRPs where pretty much everyone and their 2nd cousin has written a book... much like today's SEALs. When it comes to non-fiction there really are a lot of good and great books written by members of the units and the supporting cast, like Helo & SPUD...

One thing reading all of these books on the 1stCav LRRPS shows is just how incredible and important Barnes was to the unit.
