Rob McConnell Interviews - WILLIAM BUHLMAN - OBE - Out-of-Body Experiences
What if your consciousness could leave your physical body and travel beyond the limitations of space and time? Could you explore distant locations, encounter other dimensions and discover that human existence extends far beyond the world we experience through our five senses?Join Rob McConnell on The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show as he welcomes William Buhlman, internationally recognized author, consciousness explorer, lecturer and teacher of out-of-body experiences, for an extraordinary investigation into one of humanity's most fascinating mysteries: the possibility that consciousness can exist independently of the physical body. For more than four decades, Buhlman has devoted himself to exploring the phenomenon known as out-of-body experiences, commonly referred to as OBEs or astral projection. An out-of-body experience occurs when an individual has the sensation of observing the world from a location outside their physical body. Some people describe floating above themselves, travelling through unfamiliar environments, encountering unusual beings or experiencing a profound sense of separation from their ordinary physical identity.Others report similar sensations during sleep paralysis, lucid dreaming, meditation, near-death experiences or periods of intense emotional stress. But what exactly is happening during these extraordinary experiences? Are individuals genuinely separating their consciousness from their bodies, or are they experiencing an unusual but entirely natural state of brain activity? For William Buhlman, the search for answers began in 1972, when a college friend described a spontaneous out-of-body experience.Fascinated by the account, Buhlman began experimenting with methods intended to produce a similar experience.According to Buhlman, after approximately three weeks of dedicated practice, he experienced what he interpreted as his first conscious separation from his physical body. The event profoundly influenced his understanding of consciousness and inspired a lifelong interest in what he calls nonphysical exploration.Over the following decades, Buhlman developed a range of techniques intended to help individuals deliberately enter out-of-body states. His methods incorporate visualization, focused intention, affirmations, relaxation, meditation and exercises designed to redirect attention away from ordinary physical sensations. One technique, which he calls the Target Technique, involves concentrating on a series of familiar locations while imagining movement toward them.Buhlman believes that sustained attention and mental focus can help people experience a shift in awareness that they interpret as leaving the physical body. His personal investigations eventually led to the publication of his bestselling book, Adventures Beyond the Body: How to Experience Out-of-Body Travel. In this work, Buhlman describes his experiences and presents techniques that readers can use to explore altered states of consciousness. His subsequent book, The Secret of the Soul: Using Out-of-Body Experiences to Understand Our True Nature, examines reports collected through an international survey involving more than 16,000 participants across 42 countries. These accounts explore the sensations, perceptions and personal transformations that respondents associate with out-of-body experiences.Buhlman interprets many of these reports as evidence that human awareness may extend beyond the physical brain. However, the survey consists of self-reported experiences and does not independently establish that consciousness literally travels outside the body.Another important aspect of Buhlman's work involves his association with the Monroe Institute, an organization established by Robert Monroe to investigate altered states of consciousness.Buhlman has conducted workshops and educational programs focused on techniques for exploring out-of-body experiences. His teaching emphasizes preparation, concentration, emotional control and the importance of approaching unusual experiences without fear. The conversation also explores the relationship between astral projection and lucid dreaming.During a lucid dream, an individual becomes aware that they are dreaming and may sometimes influence the unfolding experience.Out-of-body experiences can share characteristics with lucid dreams, including vivid environments, unusual bodily sensations and an apparent separation from ordinary waking awareness. Some experiencers also describe vibrations, buzzing sounds or temporary paralysis before an apparent out-of-body episode. These sensations may overlap with known sleep-related phenomena, including the transitions between wakefulness and rapid eye movement sleep.Although out-of-body experiences are genuine subjective events, there is currently no reliable scientific evidence demonstrating that consciousness literally separates from the brain and travels independently through physical space or other dimensions.Nevertheless, the phenomenon remains an important subject for researchers investigating body awareness, perception, sleep, memory and the neurological foundations of consciousness.Buhlman's work also raises profound questions about death and the possibility of an afterlife.Following a serious cancer diagnosis in 2011, he began exploring how his spiritual understanding of consciousness might influence his approach to mortality. His later work, including Adventures in the Afterlife and Higher Self Now!, reflects his belief that physical death may represent a transition in awareness rather than the end of individual existence. While this interpretation remains a spiritual belief rather than a scientifically established conclusion, it addresses questions that have fascinated humanity throughout recorded history. What happens to consciousness when the physical body dies?Could experiences interpreted as journeys beyond the body offer insights into the human fear of death? And might the study of extraordinary states of awareness eventually reveal something unexpected about the relationship between mind and brain?Join Rob McConnell and William Buhlman for a fascinating exploration of astral projection, out-of-body experiences, lucid dreaming, altered states of consciousness, multidimensional realities, near-death experiences and the mysteries of life beyond the physical body.
