Terrible business model, given that some labware still runs on windows 98.

..for his grandmother who declared it the King of pies, thus the name.
I collect old labware and some that are over a century old and work as well as the day they were made.

There's a bit of History behind PYREX and quality glassware that goes back to WWI and the loss of glass labware from Germany due to the war. Cornmig had to develop a substitute that was as good. The name comes from the fellow who developed the glass formulation who made a pie plate as a gift

At the New River Gorge National Park, the NPS has a message for you. Particularly relevant for us, scientists, to decrease our environmental footprint. Are you using the recycling facilities offered by your university/institute ?

Safety permitting, are you considering to reuse plastic labware?

If what he is using in his video is standard labware, that would likely mean standard borosilicate glass. The solution to this could be to use another material that is not wetted by gallium. Quartz/fused silica glass might be that material.

Pyrex is one of my autistic special interests. Legit went back to school to get a degree so I could work at the Corning Glass Museum some day. Whole lot of people thinking they can identify borosilicate based on the font of the brand's logo 🙄

Also US Pyrex is still borosilicate if you buy labware

Labware? Ypsi has a place…
July 21, 2026 at 4:13 PM
Though your borosilicate labware is more likely to simply say something other than Pyrex these days. It might say DWK/Kimble/Kimax, or USALAB, or Fisherbrand. Could also say Corning PYREX.
