In CA, folks can work their way up- *to landownership.*
That's not gonna happen in a country where 1% of the population owns 70% of the land. And their land is exempt from estate taxes. So farmland gets priced at "tax shelter" prices, not "farm productivity" prices.

I definitely think high property taxes are a necessary part of rationalizing the market here, we make individual landownership way too artificially cheap.

In conclusion, in a different nation, with less racism, less commitment to landownership property for whites, and a willingness to have a more activist federal government, the Freedmen’s Bureau might have worked. Alas, we didn’t live in that America. And really, we still don’t.
