#LayeredImage
that layeredimage definer really coming in clutch ₍₍⚞(˶>ᗜ<˶)⚟⁾⁾

Thinking about making a layeredimage viewer next...

I know one exists but like...a separate app...with "on top" functionality hmmm

I should finish refining my other tools tho (っ- ‸ - ς)

WE GOT SOMETHING FOR LAYEREDIMAGE
...its still VERY rough...but yeah its something ദ്ദി ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ )

I wanted to do drag and reorder at first but man....it's tough huh?

Need a way to check as default...
...and get that drag and drop (ง ͠ಥ_ಥ)ง (it's almost as hard in renpy!)

my hands look like this so hers can look like that (i made it so the mouth will automatically close after their dialogue, i just pick which talking mouth to use [there's 23 of them])
unfortunately this seems to be the easiest solution atm. by that i mean the only one that actually works as intended

if you also want the sprite editor plug in I got it from here: cuteshadow.itch.io/layeredimage...

Oh god my sleep was haunted by layeredimage coding because I devoted so much mental energy to it yesterday 😭

I also had some weird dreams… one in a swamp, and another about Artemis II and the ISS for some reason 🤔

My vns these days tend to take heavy advantage of RenPys layeredimage system, with separated elements to easily combine into a lot of expressions. But for a starter project I'd recommend about 5 facial expressions to get started - you can always add more as you implement the script and see gaps!

something that made me quite anxious about the beauty marks of aquarius is that i'm going to need a layered side sprite for some scenes for jonas, and i never did layered sprites for side pictures, so i was quite worried about how to set up that
conclusion: "layeredimage side", it's that simple 😭😭

MVNA jam submission 2/2

This is now Version 3 of this idea. This one is especially for the sprites where all the different parts of the face are separated.

V3 integrates into the Interactive Director which means no loading times. Instant script edits. Speeeeeed.

oh, you can do other fun programing things but just with VISUALS. there's a really complex language with renpy when it comes to image layered and character busts that's well worth looking into. here's a start: tofurocks.itch.io/renpytut-lay...

The tutorial comes with illustrations and dummy assets so you can practice things and see the result right away.

This first release covers LayeredImage and two custom scripts I made: cursor parallax and flashlight effect!

I hope this project can be a useful resource for the community! ^^

we made a python program for WHODUNNIT? that lets us export layeredimage declarations + images through a guided console app, i want to release it but it requires a specific layer structure for it to work...

if any folks want to try it out let me know, would love to know if it would still b useful

That is VERY ambitious! My game with 100k words only has 4 poses for the MAIN characters and then any number of customizable expressions due to how layeredimage works.
Like, you can do it, but depending on how big your game is, SHOULD you do it? Be aware of "feature creep" with games!
May 29, 2025 at 2:37 AM
Are we talking POSES or individual expressions?
I usually start with some basic ones and go from there and highly recommend using layeredimage for more: tofurocks.itch.io/renpytut-lay...

Ok all you Ren'Py enjoyers, have you ever encountered an issue where a layeredimage has a character's [_last_say_what] dialog stretched to fill the space where their facial expression should be?
#renpy 8.3.7.25031702

It seems to happen when I resize the game window and do a rollback

this devlog i found had successfully used conditionswitch inside layeredimage so i didn't think if would be an issue, but i could not get it to work at all.... 🥹
March 19, 2025 at 8:52 AM
I found that too, but i did not use [] in the conditionswitch. It literally was just:
ConditionSwitch(
"a == 0", "image.png",
"a == 1", "image2.png"
)
If it matters, It is located in a layeredimage

I still get comments on that one LayeredImage devlog I did about two years ago now, and it makes me happy each time 😄

per reference ma avrei potuto fare codice un po' migliore e metterci anche il posizionamento + solo i connotati

wow the renp'y documentation for layeredimage is complete ass huh. scoured through the internet for external sources to try and get it a bit more but only got results for stuff i don't want and a game that is supposed to be a tutorial but doesn't work. neat!

There's some code in there that I'm actually pretty proud of. I created a new "LayeredImage" which supports layering SkiaSharp SKBitmap objects over an image (with display delays & duration), for easy animations that can then be rendered to a Canvas.

Also keeping it MVVM was an act of hubris 😂

im going to try to make him a Real Boy today (aka export all the parts and turn him into a layeredimage in ren'py). i didn't expect him to have many moving parts but the reality was UHHHHHH HE HAS A LOT

also removable jacket. and removable scar for flashbacks
