I’ve been doing the 30 day course Me and White Supremacy, a daily workbook by Layla F. Saad ( @laylafsaad ) I’m on day 13. It is remarkable how good her program is. Each day requires reading a short chapter and writing a reflection. She asks direct, challenging questions which have pushed me to pay closer attention to some embedded core behaviors and thought patterns which usually are automatic and run unchecked. If you are a white person who says “You know, I don’t really need to do this work. I know how race works in our country,” I invite you to think again, even if you think you are culturally competent. I made this comic about my efforts to push back against my own reactionary thoughts, which often happen instantaneously and in a nano second. White folks: if your first reaction around talking about race is to be defensive, look at that. Pay attention to that defensiveness and ask yourself: how might my defensive reaction be a reminder to investigate, rather than push back? Undoing our racist culture will be life long work. Count me in. #blacklivesmatter #wecandobetter #antiracism #antiracismeducationactionplan".
