Hmm . . . A 21st century John LeCarre version of a William Gibson novel, then.

For a moment, I thought you meant this was an actual time travel story! Then when I saw it was a LeCarre George Smiley story I got even more confused: a Smiley sci-fi story!?

Nevertheless. Smiley in Los Angeles? I'm there.

Oh my! We have it in my local library and I have just put a hold on it.

Many thanks!!

It’s a fantastic show which I first discovered late last year - espionage with no fake shiny bits, just the ruthless decisions and internal politics. In a shameless segue I will mention that it inspired me to create a solo rpg “Scalphunter” (the LeCarre name for the same department)

I’ve been on this Lecarre plunge and have now read all 9 of the George Smiley books in about 2.5 months and what a journey it’s been. Those later books go surprisingly hard about the toll a life of deception has on one’s humanity.

Great actors listen. The greatest actors hear for the first time, every time.
Patrick Stewart has no dialogue but owns the scene as Karla in BBC's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
From the LeCarre community on Reddit: Patrick Stewart as Karla in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979). Just one scene between him and Alec Guinness, in which Stewart has no dialogue. Magic!

Did I recommend A Spy Among Friends here? Or was it in a different thread... anyway, it's a docudrama about Kim Philby, the notorious double agent and his service bestie, Nicholas Elliot. www.imdb.com/title/tt1556...
LeCarre does his own version somewhere along the series.

~SPOILERS~

...

...

Yeah, also when they started bringing back people we thought were done. I thought when you-know-who was compromised by Russian rubles that they were going for a LeCarre-esque bang & whimper ending.

LeCarre: I wrote my book “The Looking Glass War” as a cautionary tale

DoD: At long last, we have created Operation Looking Glass from classic espionage novel Don't Create a Looking Glass War
DOD + non-official cover + economic PIRs = wapo.st/4i93jSC

I’ve read so many spy novels in my lifetime, but the John LeCarre ones deal with this exact scenario so well. The phycology of killing someone is intense and there’s no preparing you for it.

I can't remember if it was you or someone else who said, 'the tragedy of River Cartwright is he thinks he's in a Bond movie while he's actually in a LeCarre novel.' I would love for him to get that Bond movie, too. :) Go, River, Go!

Alina Habba. $50 million. A pardon. Ric Grennell getting stabbed in the back over a measly $6 million. A Venezuelan billionaire.
John LeCarre would be blushing.

Happy Birthday to the greatest spy novelist of all time, John LeCarre, 1931, Dorsetshire, UK. He worked as an MI5 officer and turned his experience into fiction while still working, writing CALL FOR THE DEAD in 1961. He wrote 26 novels, 9 in his classic George Smiley series.

You don't have to be John LeCarre to see this

This isn't even clever twisty John LeCarre stuff. It's blatant obvious Tom Clancy style action.

Non esiste nessuna logica se non sono implicate le emozioni. Vuoi fare qualcosa e quindi la fai. Quella è logica.
Vuoi fare qualcosa e non la fai, questo è il collasso della ragione.

Looks fantastic. I’ll always love Rodger’s cover for the game. Gave me a John LeCarré vibe. Great to see this alternate take on it.
