Lead was mined in the Shropshire hills, in & around the Stiperstones ridge, from the Romans onwards, up until 1911 when lead extraction at Snailbeach ended. Barytes was then mined to a limited extent until 1955 when the mine closed.

The site is owned by Shropshire Council but is managed by the volunteers of the Shropshire Mines Trust charity. If you get the opportunity, it’s a fascinating place to visit.

Impromptu evening wander revealed a rich leadmining history with a Cornish twist, alpine pansies and spring sandwort which love lead, tales of murder, a curse ....all topped off with a pint of Moonshine....Abbeydale, not homebrew!

A guy driving the wrong way up Leadmine Road directly at me decided he should curse me out because I was driving the correct direction on the road. He really didn't like that I honked my horn at him for being on the wrong side of the road.

The main thing going for it is that it isn’t multihulls. I think they had the right idea with the IACC back in the early 90s but the rule was too skewed to ‘leadmine’ boats which weren’t quite what the rulemakers envisaged

Yesterday we climbed Buckden Pike in Wharfedale. Stunning views of Penn-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, remains of an old leadmine and a rather moving WW2 monument. Encouraging also to see peat restoration in progress!

There seems to be a clear split in numbers of hibernating bats based on altitude. Normal numbers in high sites, but lowland sites lower numbers than usual.

Used the day off to hike up Carrickgollogan, in the Dublin Mountains
A prominent feature of Carrickgollogan is the flue chimney of the former Ballycorus Leadmine. A stone chimney with an external spiral staricase around it stands on a rise, with gorse plants in the foreground. A view out to sea from atop Carrickgollogan. The city of Dublin can be seen in the distance, with the sea behind, under a cloudy sky. A view out to other mountains in the same range as Carrickgollogan. A view from along the path that leads to the summit of Carrickgollogan. Thick flora is in the foreground. In the distance, a headland hill (Killiney) can be seen in the center of the frame, with a small island (Dalkey) to the right and a larger peninsula (Howth) to the left.
