Created c.1150 -1200, this manuscript from one of our Greek
Gospel Lectionaries features some lovely borders, known as
pylai, around the headings for the first lection of weeks
for Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

And the problem is often exacerbated--intentionally? probably originally, and now carried forward out of tradition--by the lectionaries in both the Catholic and the Protestant traditions.

Lectionaries don't cover the entire NT. They pick and choose excerpts and verses.

As a little treat for you, here's an #ArabicBible Advent calendar 🧵. Every day I'll post a verse from the Christmas story from one of the oldest Arabic Gospel lectionaries, Sinai ar. 72, dated 897 CE (and a few other texts in between). [2nd attempt, I won't be offended if you point out my nonsense.]

I really like the way lectionaries prescribe one set of Scripture passages and prayers for everybody. Like we're all human beings with souls with similar needs, or something.

I feel this way about most lectionaries, tbh
there was more business to find out what should be read, than to read it when it was found out.

White or gold. It will be in the next set of lectionaries when they come out.

The lectionary is such a wonderful gift to the church.

I'm not holding my breath for the implementation of the Synod's recommendation that women in salvation history "find adequate space inside liturgical lectionaries," but I would really like to see it.

I often wish our daily lectionaries matched up.

I love that both Lectionaries are in Luke right now. Because it's giving us preachers a lot of cover to preach on our shared Christian call to give a crap about people.

Parishioner: "Hey, no preaching politics!"
Pastor: [holding up Bible] "No politics here, I'm just relaying what Jesus said."

To my embarrassment, I avoided more urgent work this afternoon by making a chart compiling the 1928 and 1945 Office lectionaries (I had no idea the 1928 Episcopal BCP had two lectionaries!) for these days, e.g.: ⚓
