Villa Farnesina Cubiculum B fresco depicting the Nymphs of Mount Nysa caring for the infant Dionysus.
The baby is shown being nursed or tended to by female figures in a lush setting. It is painted in a "Neo-Attic" or "lekythos" style, which mimics the look of 5th-c. BCE Greek pottery.

Just look at the expressive 'impressionistic' brushwork on this little lekythos dated 500 BCE. The whole object stands no taller than a modern standard size wine bottle.

For #PhallusThursday we have this squat red-figure lekythos (oil jar), which depicts an ithyphallic, lecherous satyr lifting the chiton of a sleeping maenad. The moment she wakes, that thyrsus becomes a weapon. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

The scene depicts a moment in the endless story of the satyrs' pursuit of maenads, who are sometimes willing, sometimes very much not.

Greek, ca. 430-410 BCE. Attributed to Polion. On loan to the #MetMuseum. 🏺 2/

Looks like Bluesky glitched on the upload of the photo of the full lekythos. If it happens again, the image can be accessed via that Flickr link.

This kind of vase (a lekythos) was associated with funerary rites - it was used to contain olive oil. The young man in the centre of the image is probably the deceased, and it’s such a moving depiction: he is so beautiful and so melancholy.
