#Leptostomia
I'm surprised I've managed to keep this series going almost daily. Anyways, here's the next Kem Kem pterosaur - the tiny probe-feeder Leptostomia! As always, size comparison below ⬇️

Q: The weirdest pterosaur

The ones that look like animated geometric shapes from the uncanny valley, with weird body proportions. Especially big heads, which evolved separately in different pterosaur families (Moganopterus, Leptostomia)

I must issue an apology - I have clearly been misinterpreting the data and have resized the Kem Kem fauna accordingly.

I am *definitely* not being held at beak-point by Leptostomia.

Known only from a beak (like many of the pterosaurs here), Leptostomia is the tiniest of our animals so far, with a wingspan barely breaking one metre.

Alanqidae - The Gondwanan Phoenixes

The alanqids are a relatively newly recognised pterosaur group, and here are all the currently perceived members; Alanqa, Xericeps and Leptostomia from Morocco, and Argentinadraco from, well, Argentina.

Up to date, rather niche information with citations throughout. Focus on niche species. Decent palaeoart.

This is one of the tiniest of our animals so far, I think only beat out by Leptostomia. Big thanks to @arminreindl.bsky.social for help with some anatomy details!

As the flock of Leptostomia continue their flight north, Hilda gets a boost from Johanna to be up close with the small pterosaurs as they fly by the beach

After four months and 36 illustrations, I present the final Kem Kem chart – a look at of one of the most incredible ecosystems the world has ever seen.

Short thread below!

Bluesky's open; quote one art to promote yourself!

A slightly different piece of artwork from me this time: this is a specimen drawing I did of the holotype of Leptostomia (a mid Cretaceous Moroccan #pterosaur). I enjoy doing specimen drawings, but don't have good scans of most. #sciart #paleoart

A speculative interaction where a little opportunistic Leptostomia tries to peck at stuck food from the mouth of a sleepy Anhanguera. I like to think the bigger pterosaur is surprised, but not particularly fussed.

I definitely have to draw the other pterosaurs airborne though - would hugely help with the composition!

And with that, the size chart enters a new frontier! It will likely keep stretching out to the sides, as well as further down - but I think we've hit the upper limit with that titanosaur.

This pterosaur illustration is not one I'm a huge fan of - I think I could have done better with the colours and pose - but it is nice to bring some verticality to this size chart.

It's nice to start filling out the skies again! There are quite a few similar looking toothed pterosaurs, so Anhanguera won't be alone for long!

but who is leptostomia? well, @kakapojay.bsky.social can explain

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Leptostomia begaaensis

From Late Cretaceous Kem Kem Group, Morocco, "slim mouth" is a small pterosaur known for its very unusual, long compressed beak likely used to feed on invertebrates. Its exact classification is debated due to fragmentary remains

The file size for this size comparison image keeps getting bigger - will have to do something about that! Anyways, Elosuchus is a large animal, attaining lengths of over 7m, a full metre longer than any living crocodile.

When reconstructing an critterthis poorly known, I tend to go for a more conservative appearance, taking into account relatives from similar times/places. Unfortunately, footprints are incredibly difficult to assign, and ornithopod footprints aren't dissimilar from theropod ones.
