A graphic designer selects the one typeface best suited to a project from a huge assortment with tiny variations. Every headline is minutely kerned (sometimes including ligatures). Letterspacing and linespacing are specified. When done right, it's completely invisible —just a pleasure to read.

This one got it right. Leading goes between rows, kerning is removal of space between two specific characters. Letterspacing is the uniform space between every character.

Ana Marie is right as usual. I never crunched the numbers, but I have a record going back years of saying that Substack had no profitability potential.
