We're at #LewishamCentral Assembly tonight, so I might go full old-school Twitter and livetweet a few bits from it!

I'm at #LewishamCentral Assembly. Forgot to livetweet the first segment because it was a TfL guy answering questions so obviously I was the source of some of those! No major revelations but they do expect to start rolling out new DLR vehicles "this year"

The Leemore Centre, just along the road from the town centre, is going to become a new hub for young people, with skills and mental health centres there #LewishamCentral

He confirms that the car park on the shopping centre at the moment will close for good. Apparently this has been one of the most contentious elements in consultations (because of course it has, motorists eh) #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:21 PM
Lots of people begging for a food market and mentioning Model Market, as in every other consultation we hear about at #LewishamCentral Assembly, yet still no business has launched one. Also saying "no more gyms, we have enough gyms". I endorse this no-gyms-only-food message
March 27, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Someone asks about shop vacancies. Apparently Lewisham has one of the lowest empty shop rates of Landsec's sites around London and other UK cities, so that's nice! #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:31 PM
More imminently, this summer will see the return of Model Market, the street-food market formerly run by Street Feast before they quit a few years ago. They're only taking applications from Lewisham-based food traders and have had 220 applicants already! #LewishamCentral

Next, an update on the Lewisham Library refurb, which should look something like this when complete #LewishamCentral

Here's some details of the Lewisham Library project from its architects' website: www.architecture00.net/00projects/l... #LewishamCentral

Interesting question about designing out crime. 100% CCTV coverage, inevitably, but also just having people, life, activity in the town centre in the evenings will make a big difference! #LewishamCentral

Finally, Edison mentions his ongoing attempts to resurrect the Lewisham Station Users' Group. They're looking for local people who use Lewisham station regularly to get involved. Contact him at Edison.Huynh@lewisham.gov.uk if you're interested! #LewishamCentral

First speaker is from Landsec, who've submitted their planning application for redevelopment of Lewisham Shopping Centre. The planning process will be slow and complex but they hope they may be able to start the work around mid-2026. #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:09 PM
Someone asks about the Bakerloo line extension. Apparently there'll be another consultation soon about whether to build it just to Lewisham or through Catford to Bromley, but ultimately it still needs gov't funding. Council estimates it would pay for itself in 10yrs if built #LewishamCentral
February 12, 2026 at 8:59 PM
Finally, some other local updates from our councillors Edison and Aliyah. Most excitingly, tomorrow morning there will be an announcement about the new nine-screen cinema: an operator has signed up and will show both mainstream films and other screenings (National Theatre Live etc) #LewishamCentral

He clarifies that the council is not involved in running this project at all, it's entirely privately run. If they do get a public grant in future, it'll be used to increase the levels of affordable housing from the currently proposed 20% #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:19 PM
Finally, I asked about a rumour I'd heard that the food and arty bit of the project might come first in the redevelopment (yes please). Not exactly, but they are aiming to reopen a somewhat altered Model Market this summer! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 #LewishamCentral

The full build will take around ten years, which is about twice as long as it could take at best if they just wiped the whole site out and started again, but they think it's worth it to keep the shopping centre running throughout. #LewishamCentral

He thought there was no contest between Glastonbury and #LewishamCentral Assembly and that we would be in the better place on 26 June, but actually tonight we chose the Assembly over free canapés overlooking the Thames in the new Southbank Centre members' lounge, so… our priorities may be unusual 😁

The Landsec speaker is doing some myth-busting. First: the shopping centre will never close. About five-sixths of it will remain open at all times, with a sixth at time closing and being rebuilt. Key shops such as Boots will move around to avoid ever closing. #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:13 PM
"We're not trying to put back a new, posher shopping centre than is there now, the customers will still be the same." There will be more choice though in the new shopping centre, with more food and evening leisure destinations, including a not-for-profit music and art venue. #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:15 PM
The Q&A of course very quickly got onto the loss of the car park. He gave a good defence of removing this: only 5% of shoppers come to the centre by car, so it doesn't make sense to give over so much land (ramps, roof etc) for so few people. #LewishamCentral
January 23, 2025 at 7:33 PM
#LewishamCentral Assembly tonight at 7pm, all who live or work in our tiny but tall council ward welcome at Salvation Army Centre on Albion Way, and I'll probably live-BS it (that is what we call live-tweeting here isn't it??). Suspect we'll hear about the Lewisham Gateway basement flood nightmare 😬
March 27, 2025 at 9:24 AM
They've now secured funding to have around 20% affordable housing in the #LewishamGateway scheme, which will be offered at London Living Rent; and reduced the height of some towers in their revised planning application. #LewishamCentral

Police community contact points will be set up soon at Lewisham Shopping Centre on some Wednesday daytimes (starting tomorrow) and Glass Mill Leisure Centre on some Thursday daytimes, and at the two different #LewishamCentral Good Hope cafés at other times.
