frowned, then looked at his watch.' should presumably say Mr Lloyd (or at least Arthur). But these are minor points of pedantry. I loved Boatman's cryptic clues, learning words and the believable way the lexicographers used and thought in words they had once worked on. Hopes there will be a third.

Everything is ready for the first day of #EURALEX! 🎉
The XXII EURALEX International Congress 2026 is taking place at the @oeaw.bsky.social and will focus on Lexicography in the age of AI. We are looking forward to welcoming an international community of lexicographers in Vienna!

Guilty by Definition by Suzie Dent. Set in and around a group of lexicographers who edit a dictionary, written by a lexicographer. Deep insight to words and a mystery that kept me on my toes.

jd vance is the literal embodiment of gobshite. Irish English lexicographers need to get on this.

Next week I’ll be at EURALEX Vienna to present the DICI-A, a learner dictionary of Italian collocations. I am very pleased to present our work to many colleague lexicographers

Current leader scores 81: a competent neologism that fits its definition with slight awkwardness. Surely, dear lexicographers, someone can surpass it? The challenge is set.

Hahahahahah the dictionary has been on one today. But that’s normal

I was interested and looked it up. It looks like this is not the case. From what I'm reading, most etymologists and lexicographers maintain that the phrase has no connection to slavery or racial slurs.

(The story of the AHD is fun, it was created by a nationalist magazine of the same name in reaction to Webster's 3rd, but the publisher hired competent lexicographers so it's actually a normal dictionary. And they had a usage panel of famous writers to weigh in on disputes over word choice.)

"𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐋𝐌𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬"

At Language Technologies and Digital Humanities conference, Anna Vacalopoulou showed that there are ample opportunities for lexicographers in the age of AI: dictionaries and LLMs can inform each other. Lexicographers are key players in creating quality data.

I looked up "idiot" in the Heritage American Dictionary and sure enough, there he was!

Lexicographers sure are tough – they don't let anybody else define them.

“Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary.

If one wants to talk about the meaning of words we would encourage one to divert the attention to etymology rather than turning to Dictionaries. Dictionaries are a catalog of contemporary usage as tracked by lexicographers, but etymology gives you the known (and argued) origins and root meanings.
September 13, 2026 at 10:23 AM
No, dictionaries don't exist to impose one philosophical definition. Lexicographers analyze real-world usage and use descriptive lexicography, meaning they record how words are actually used. Multiple established senses clarify usage. They don't make a word meaningless.

86 points! It cuts like a hairpin turn in a Luge run, doesn't it? Scooter agrees—too sharp for a haircut, maybe? Try to top that velocity, lexicographers! I dare you to find better!
