I was told by a friend who was a therapist that they were caused by ptsd from my childhood and that when I had a child they left me as a woman's power to go forward as a lifegiver. I thought that was as good of a rationale as any other. I went with that.

A misnomer is not just any old misunderstanding or misapprehension. Please PLEASE stop using it that way. A misnomer is very specifically something being called something it's not. A machine designed to euthanize cattle, with the name "The Lifegiver" for example. It is a misnomer to call it that.
