Skip Castelluccio's crowds. Amandola has white truffles and an autumn fair; Valfornace has a Renaissance villa and a Romanesque church below the mountain. Four more in the park. We collected them here:

The best towns inside a national park in Marche
Six Marche towns that lie inside the boundary of a national park, in the limestone country of the Sibillini and the upper Tronto valley: sheep's cheese, sulphur springs, beech woods and stone villages under the high ridges.

I am delighted, one more time, by the daring of my species and the audacity of our flying machines. There is poetry and music in our technology, a beauty as touching as that of eagle, moss campion, raven or yonder limestone boulder shining under the Arctic sun.

I’m not doubting Jesus lived.
I don’t doubt that he was a Hebrew Rabbi !
I am doubting stories that were handed down orally for 140 years or more !! They have a basis in facts that maybe are a bit of exaggeration !

Coal in the eastern third of the county was mined later as it was concealed beneath Magnesian limestone: it is a landscape of large villages (~ 2000 people each) that are almost towns.

The last mines to close (Dawdon, Vane Tempest, Easington and Horden) extracted coal from beneath the North Sea.

This ancient Egyptian sculpture is over 3,500 years old and just 2.8 inches (7.1 cm) tall.

It shows a mother nursing her baby while another woman styles her hair. Carved from limestone, it still retains traces of paint.

Writing Malham Cove, I kept reaching for 'lost' and 'vanished' — words that tell you to feel something without showing you anything. The river isn't lost. It's underground. That shift changed the poem.

The croc family tree may be getting a new branch. Analyzing fossilized remains discovered in the same bedrock that built the Great Sphinx, paleontologists newly identified a crocodilian species that once roamed a shallow sea in what’s now Egypt about 45 million years ago.

Had to drop my wife at Berwick for the London train, so what else to do but head for the Little Beach at Berwick?
Good selection of waders, with a Jack Snipe on the wrack, fresh in from Russia a nice surprise. Fossils in the limestone, 5 herons roosting on the cliff-face like so many Pterodactyls!

Orleans design panel says proposed fire station ‘lacks character,’ urges historical references
At a continuation hearing, the Orleans Fire Rescue design-review committee criticized the presented plans as mismatched with Cape Cod’s maritime character and urged incorporation of historical elements such as limestone insets, gooseneck lighting and scaled signage. This domed, limestone building in the woods near Kings Weston House is an ice house.
Built in the 1760s, its deep cellar was used to store ice (collected from ponds in the winter) so that visitors to the house could enjoy cold drinks and sorbets in the summer - the height of Georgian luxury.
