Building A Custom CNC: Part 1
Introduction # Coming from a poor background, I couldn’t prove that I had the academic knowledge to design and run a CNC router. So I decided to build my own to prove to the world that I have the tech...

This is my homebuilt #cncrouter. I call it Galactus.
I remember hours of work went into the metal plates hand finishing them. The #cnc uses #linux and runs #linuxcnc . Most of my #gcode is made in #blender using FabexCNC (formerly BlenderCAM).

Upgrading the CNC control from my old Chronos Maker all-in-one GRBL board to a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB running LinuxCNC for more functionality, power and finer control of the stepper motors. Hardware setup is pretty straightforward, but configuring the software could be fun 😰

I used the Kiw cable retractable bungees I used for my old VR tether to suspend the dust collector hose for my CNC. I’m using @thomllama.com TPU dust boot and designed a hose adapter and using a harbor freight vac and cyclone. I also figured out the Classic Ladder module for LinuxCNC for vfd spindle

That LinuxCNC gives you DOCUMENTED REGISTER NUMBERS IN THE THOUSANDS for parts of the machine Also Has My Goat

lmao, this one isn't a FANUC controller.

the one here is linuxcnc and is more or less a normal PC with some weird kernel wizardry

\o/ yatta!

CNC machine update. I just got my first motor movement from linuxcnc on the CNC machine.
I only plugged in the x motor because I wasn't sure the drivers were running as I saw no flashes. But motor was moving!

I'll be able to do full movement tests tomorrow! Woooohooooo!

Not strong enough.. ..I was wrong. I can't believe how well this came out. My #homebuilt #cncrouter can cut stone (Slate). Made with #opensource software like #blender, #inkscape and #linuxcnc. then cut with #carbide
Img. from my #coffee wall hanging. Once I find a good material I'll post that too.

Je viens de trouver le site LinuxCNC, c'est aride comme seuls les libristes savent le faire, mais ça ouvre de super perspectives !

Noice! Too bad it's a LinuxCNC controller though... Can't use MillMage to drive it directly. But at least you'll be able to design & export gcodes for it ;)

hehe, i thought this was physical tools.. ..I built a CNC machine from scratch using LinuxCNC and every PC in my house runs linux of some description.. .i am currently designing a laser cutter using open source tech too. www.dangerouslygoodideas.online/blog

The wiring is pretty straightforward; there’s just a lot of it. I’m upgrading from GRBL to LinuxCNC running on a Raspberry Pi 5
with a parallel port expansion and getting everything talking and understanding is going to be interesting.

CNC progress! Vfd now communicating in linuxcnc now... I'll be cutting by next weekend. And if all's well. I'll be making the permanent Aluminium z plate to replace the temp plywood one on there now, next weekend too....

Yeah the permissions structure and so on seems to be a major problem throughout the Linux world. When I was working with linuxcnc, a Debian variant, it seriously interfered with getting shit done. It's a computer run without internet access, only does one thing etc.

Random-ass homebrew CNC question:

Does anyone have experience with the FlexiHAL CNC controllers when paired with a Raspberry Pi running LinuxCNC?

Considering replacing a Centroid Acorn with one to get more axes/inputs in a smaller physical package
