The patient said having the same lipspeaker regularly offered more than familiarity. It reduced anxiety & gave them greater confidence during appointments.
It isn't just about access. Continuity can support wellbeing & mental health too #MentalWellBeing

It’s lose-lose. The deaf person won’t have a lipspeaker, and the lipspeaker feels they can’t work for such an unethical agency. They probably won the contract as they’re cheap. They’re a spoken-foreign language agency who doesn’t understand or respect the #Deaf community.

When they asked to confirm the fee, they received an email to say the booking had been cancelled. The lipspeaker believes it’s the aforementioned client, so now everyone must wait to see if another #Lipspeaker attends that appointment. If not, complaints will be made. 👇🏾

Some background: the #Lippie joined the agency as a deaf person they worked with couldn’t get support at a hospital around an hour away from the Lipspeaker. They were told one was booked but then they’d ’gone to the wrong place’. This isn’t true. There was no #Lipspeaker. 👇🏾

While #Lipspeakers can be booked direct, agencies hold contracts for hospitals, local gov, DWP etc. Most are fine but recently one of us had a shocking experience when an agency refused to tell the #Lipspeaker their fee. When they pressed for it, they were removed from the job👇🏾

If you need to book a #Lipspeaker, you can easily book direct and save yourself inflated and unnecessary agency fees. All qualified #Lipspeakers are registered with NRCPD. Use their search feature to look up lipspeakers in your area and contact them directly. #NRCPD
