"We can and must resist

and you are not alone"

Critical refusal and critical literacies have been lampooned in ed tech circles as "burying your head in the sand." In fact, they reflect awareness of the full spectrum of options in responding to emerging tech and the commercial products being pushed on schools.
"Of course, we have to teach our students about AI technologies. Teaching about AI technologies should be just like how we teach ‘no smoking’ or the causal links between lung cancer and cigarette smoke; yet, we do not teach students how to roll cigarettes and smoke them." zenodo.org/records/2008...
Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia
Artificial intelligence (AI) companies and their rhetoric infringe on academia in harmful ways, mirroring past uncritical acceptance of industry logics, such as those of tobacco and petroleum. In this...

'This kind of system “is a thieving, hallucinating, biased, data-scraping, eco-destroying, surveillance bot that will never be able to reconcile the receipts of its unethical origins” (Dusseau 2025, p. 16).' #AI

Also, this. I can see that cadre of writing studies scholars inuring the field to particular types of ethics and literacies that do not account for power and the machinations of Big Tech.
There’s no A.I. “literacy”. There is only power, to either rebuild or eradicate commonly shared knowledge production. They haz it. Remains to be seen if we haz some too.

Importantly - how can they exercise their rights as citizens around these harms? I wrote about this here
www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I want add two important things to the letter:

1) Media/data/AI literacy is necessary FOR EVERYONE, not just kids and young people
->
Building data citizenship and learning to resist in the datafied society
This paper explores what literacies people need to challenge big tech companies. We selected key digital rights practitioners, who mediate between policy and public awareness and have diverse exper...

"I am for all sorts of literacies, except for the one where one reads books."
October 7, 2026 at 12:28 PM
The “literacies“ framework is as intellectually bankrupt as polarization right now. We will keep using it because when you’ve got one hammer and the NSF social science funding has dried up everything looks like a nostalgic managerial class nail.
"To fight back, Americans need to learn the counterspy techniques of C.I.A. officers: using multiple sources to check information; testing those sources regularly for reliability; never getting complacent and trusting one source without thinking."
The number of dangers and the amount of work AI is already causing and will cause us is astounding.

Yet we keep getting advice on how to make it work for us. FU if that is your advice.

Also, a very good way to look at the interactions where users are (for better for worse and often worse) able to extract some utility from the outputs is @markdingemanse.net's work on prompt engineering as divination.
Interactional foundations for critical AI literacies
The ubiquity and ease of use of large language models makes it easy to overlook the interactional and interpretive processes at play. To understand the attraction of this technology we need to trace i...
