Flowering St.Patrick's cabbage growing on bare rock as a lithophyte.

The super moist conditions of rainforest make this possible for a wonderful variety of flora.

Fog- & dew-catching plants occur outside SW Africa. For example, the extremely fuzzy leaves of Tillandsia tectorum harvest fog from the dry parts of Peru & Ecuador, where it is a lithophyte/epiphyte. 📷: jhanyp90 CCBYNC4 #Bromeliaceae #fog #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Spring is sprung! Sydney Rock Orchid (Dendrobium speciosum), which grows as an epiphyte on trees or a lithophyte on rocks. A hardy and popular species found along the east coast of Aust, producing showy racemes of creamy-white flowers in spring. #WildOz #orchids #AustralianWildflowers

This rock is doing such a good job making his part of the world better. Be like the rock! Good rock.

P.S. a lithophyte is a plant that doesn't grow in soil, but on the surface of a rock. Compare with "epiphyte".

Polypodium vulgare, Common Polypody, hardy, wintergreen, opportunist - grows as a lithophyte (on rocks and stone) and an epiphyte (on trees) - exploits those niches wherever it can.

Grounded

You gave me a myth
volant
tempting and believable
from your lips. After
the initial lift you left me
hanging
like a Lithophyte, obligate
on a cliff, rocked
but
never quite falling

I grew up with large plants of Philodendron bipinnatifidum in the front yard. I was fascinated by their ropey roots. In its natural habitat, in South America, it is a lithophyte, growing in dry, exposed areas (not unlike the front yard). #Araceae #TropicalBotany #aroids #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

Lichen/bryophyte lithophyte complex on bedrock. St. Louis Co., Minnesota, USA. Adapted to more extreme microsite conditions (e.g. moisture, temperature etc). Hopefully these species have the adaptive genetic flexibility to survive a more extreme world. 🧪

Speed Poem #1
Epiphyte

Imagine being an epiphyte
Epi meaning above
I love nothing I need nothing
I get my smoothies & lasagna from breathing atoms
Or better yet a lithophyte
Lover of rocks
A lithophile
I cling to my rock and hum
That is all I have to do
In the world
Just sit here and phyte
