Also, the question about extinction pathways was exactly my thought when I first heard the 10% thing because I'm one of those weird logframe people. Tell me exactly how x action(s) leads to y outcome(s).

The problem there is we'd spend so much time hashing out the logframe that the Zetas would get angry and shoot us. Better to start our own operation

This reflection on alternative measurement gets into why the log frame often feels like an attempt to nail spaghetti to a wall — to force complex, relational, adaptive work into a linear accountability framework shiftthepower.org/2025/04/14/r... #ShiftThePower #MeasuringWhatMatters
Rethinking the Logframe: A Reflection on Power, Purpose, and Measurement
It’s striking how enduring the logframe has been. Perhaps because many organisations were smaller and more centralised then, adoption was easier. Or perhaps once embedded in donor systems, it was too ...

The logframe framed funding as a contract, not a collaboration. Evaluation was a tool of compliance, not learning. It wasn’t designed to build trust, but to manage distance. So can a tool born from control ever be used to share power?

Logframes trace back to the late 1960s, when the USAID wanted a better way to evaluate its global programs — particularly to demonstrate their contribution to anti-communism and to opening new markets for American business shiftthepower.org/2025/04/14/r...

Every year, I ask students to do a logframe for a project they'd like to see. This year's entries:
- ending period poverty
- improving access to nutritious food
- protecting women in clubs
- supporting mental health

It's a great list, but also worrying in a way.

My sector is dreadful for this. The NGO attribution error: believing that it’s in any way meaningful to measure the upper levels of a logframe. Deliver some outputs, measure some immediate leading or (better yet) lagging indicators. Anything beyond that should be an argument, not a metric
The corporate attribution error (Cat Hicks @grimalkina.bsky.social) is when a company confidently credits big, real-world outcomes to their own intentional initiatives while underweighting (or ignoring) broader environmental and situational causes and the thinness of the evidence.

Shift 3: Fund data citizens demand. 📊

Stop building dashboards for donor HQs in London or DC.
