“Fire on stage” is how @mehdirhasan.bsky.social describes Lula’s debates prior to winning the election in Brazil.

he and @naomiaklein.bsky.social unpack the lessons for Democrats from Lula’s victory, including his mic drop moments before the election.

Lula’s victory in the Brazilian presidential runoff election last week demonstrated that pro-democracy forces can mobilize at a large scale in digital spaces that the far right has dominated for the past decade.

From Gustavo Ribeiro and Lutiana Valadares Fernandes Barbosa:
Lula’s Army: Lessons From Online Political Mobilization
Lula's victory last week carries a lesson about how online political mobilization can be a powerful tool for pro-democracy movements.

I remember the particular argument in the constant debates over X that emphasized the importance of engaging with the perspectives of the people saying the Nazi shit on that platform, and am struck by how diametrically opposed to that tactic it appears that Lula's Army was
I think the most important lessons to be learned from Exército do Lula is how the logics of social media platforms *can be* strategically undermined by coordination and rallying around a handful of major talking points, alongside one simple, but crucial rule: do NOT engage with far-right accounts.

From coordinated social media campaigns to reclaiming national symbols, the online strategy mobilized many to vote for Lula, in an effort that experts say offers a striking example of how the Brazilian left learned to fight the right on its turf. https://cnn.it/48sYbEp

In 3 wks, Congressman Janones, 42, grew Lula's WhatsApp from 50k to 11m, focusing on supporters, NOT undecideds.

Via videos, audio, and posts, Lula's "General" taught "Army" to use hashtags, like posts, comment on livestreams, share videos & photos making the “L” hand sign & recruit new members. 1/

After not recognizing Lula's historic victory by over 4.4 million votes in Brazil’s Presidential elections this past Sunday, Trump is now granting political asylum on completely spurious grounds to Lula's neofascist adversary, Flavio Bolsonaro.
