The MAIB have published an interim report on the loss of superyacht Bayesian.

Pretty sobering reading.

Bit of serious news for some of the professionals here, although I'd hope it doesn't teach you much: the MAIB have issued a rare video bulletin after the loss of the tug Biter showing exactly what happened and actions required.

Sobering stuff.

(TW: two died in this incident)

I agree with this take 100%: bsky.app/profile/maib...
I propose 3 rules for meeting the expanding energy needs of Big Tech, fairly: 1) They pay the full cost; 2) No fossil fuels can be used (100% clean energy); 3) Communities have a fair say in siting decisions.

Anybody who checks in on the MAIB reports will know how dangerous fishing is.

It's industrial machinery, being operated at sea, under huge financial pressures and generally by small - often single boat - enterprises.

It's also worth adding that I'm a Brit, and have more experience reading MAIB reports then their US equivalents. The comments I'm about to make about the report itself ought to be read in that vein.

I had quite the culture shock.

In September 2020 the paddle steamer Waverley arrived at Arran's Brodick Pier with an excess of velocity, or - to put it in technical nautical terms - twatted it.

And after four and a half years of thinking about it carefully, the MAIB have finally concluded it probably shouldn't have done that.

Now that's presumably a cultural difference between what the US Coast Guard are apparently trying to do (find a culprit) and what the MAIB try to do (give other people enough information to make better choices), so y'know, your mileage may vary. I've got other criticisms though...

MAIB investigation concluded that the vulnerabilities weren’t identified in the stability information book carried on board. => these vulnerabilities were also unknown to either the owner or the crew of Bayesian. The suit appears opportunistic to distract from issues raised by the MAIB investigation

For those who need a reminder, Bayesian foundered in a sudden burst of bad weather. It took less than ten minutes to go from light winds to a full capsize.

The MAIB interim report suggests that, with the keel raised, gusts of over 60 knots were sufficient to knock it irrecoverably sideways:

1/x So last year in August the superyacht Bayesian sank and unfortunately 7 people died. As the yacht was registered in the UK, the MAIB (Maritime Accident Investigation Branch) has also openend an investigation. A preliminary report has been published. #maritimeincidents www.gov.uk/maib-reports...

And I even get the impression the MAIB might just have been a little bit in love with Waverley.

And you can certainly see why...

1/x 13 December 2021, 0327, Baltic Sea. The UK cargo ship Scot Carrier ploughed into the Danish barge Karin Høj in the Bornholmsgat traffic separation scheme off Sweden. The barge capsized in seconds. Both her crew died. The MAIB investigation is grim reading. A long 🧵

There's a lot of this where I feel the MAIB would have asked a few more questions in order to learn some practical lessons for future incidents. It's quite frustrating.
August 6, 2025 at 9:46 PM
But here's the thing. The MAIB tried again and again and again to repeat the problem. It just wouldn't bloody do it. Couldn't bloody do it.

I mean, they could see how it happened. That was obvious.

It just didn't.
