I think the main reason there are not joke characters anymore has more to do with the economics of no one wants to pay for a DLC character who is *intentionally* kinda shit as a joke. So now a joke character has to find other ways to be funny. SFV Dan and MBTL Nekoarc are rare modern examples.

The game I currently play the most MBTL has like 80 ppl per day on average online. The game I know of with the highest per day numbers GGST hangs between 800-2000 users depending on whether or not a patch has been dropped. FGs are not the cash cows that shooters and MOBAs are in any way.

mbtl is already a game kind of lacking in sauce but what it definitely needed more of are poetic vocal tracks about dying slowly and painfully. Actress Again had about 3x as much

I'm so out of practice with fighting games but had a fun session with oomf. Mbtl is still fun I just am so caught off guard by how hyperaggresive it is. Kouma funny grab

her loops are really fun to learn and use some moves she doesn't have in mbtl so it's a novel experience (in exchange she gets a lot more variety in her mbtl version with how to use special moves to extend combos)
