The Internet has strengthened democracy by giving people a voice and making information accessible. But, it has also created filter bubbles, spreading misinformation and polarization. Though it gives us more ways to participate, it also gives us more ways to be divided.

I think internet regulation is important because of how much harmful content is out there, especially with so many minors using social media. Section 230 should be abolished so platforms can be held accountable without taking away people’s right to free speech.

Surveillance capitalism crosses a line by turning our private lives into corporate profit. Tech companies harvest our data to manipulate what we do, and strip away our autonomy without consent. It's a huge invasion of privacy and we need laws to protect us.

One negative impact towards democracy that’s come as a result of the internet is the idea of a “filter bubble”. “Filter Bubbles” are when people are exposed to ideas or concepts that they may already believe in which can then strengthen confirmation bias alongside algorithms.

I think the Internet has had a mixed effect on democracy. It gives people more access to information and creates opportunities for more voices to be heard, but misinformation, political division, and algorithms can shape what people see and believe.

I think surveillance capitalism violates privacy, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't work. Targeted ads use my data to show me products I actually want, and I've bought things because of them. It's invasive yes, but that's what makes it so effective and profitable.

The Internet made a positive effect on democracy because it gave people access to information, encouraged free speech, and helped communities organize. However, misinformation is a serious problems. Overall, it strengthened democracy only when people use it responsibly.

The internet greatly affects democracy in our nation today because it allows people to access the news and voice their opinions. The Internet of Things shows how it is deeply integrated into our lives. However, a digital divide, misinformation, and disinformation still exist.

The gramophone was important to early youth culture because it brought popular culture into homes. It encouraged record collecting and interest in artists. Nowadays, Nintendo brings a more interactive culture into homes and created shared gaming (even niche) communities.

I believe that payola still persists in today’s music industry, but it’s not as obvious as before when record promoters would pay djs to play songs. Today we see a lot of music promotion through social media apps. Songs can become popular through dance trends, edits, etc. #MEDIA180_F26_HEADLINE

3. I believe the Internet requires more regulation . I think it should mainly regulate imagery because a lot of it can be much more negative or even dangerous than text. And I think social media platforms should be held accountable for the content posted on their sites.

Surveillance capitalism violates individual privacy to increase a company's profit margins. It started from personalized ads to your data being used to teach AI models that are not profitable yet. Once AI becomes profitable, data harvesting will become more invasive.

I think the Internet has been mostly good for democracy because it gives people a chance to speak for themselves+hear opinions they might not get from traditional media. At the same time, misinformation is the biggest downside because it can make it hard to know what to trust #MEDIA180_F26_HEADLINE

The Internet, in all forms of media, needs to be regulated, as well as taking down Section 230. Many forms of media need to be handled in terms of the slow structural violence it impacts on others, impacting a person's mind over time, to the point where they are corrupted.

The Internet is extremely accessible and diverse. However, because of misinformation, it’s more important to critique everything we see and check our sources before forming an opinion, so it doesn’t lead to division between us and others on a specific issue.

Local music scenes can still thrive. Streaming has altered how they grow. In the past cities gave rise to sounds and identities. Today Spotify, TikTok and social media let local artists reach audiences fast which makes local music scenes less bound to a single place.

I believe the Internet has had on democracy in America is neutral. Speaking from my own perspective. Someone who is running for a spot in the office can easily win more votes depending on how much they flood themselves in the internet and have their media reach us.

I'd say that surveillance capitalism is honestly not as bad as people think. People are too afraid of what happens with their data but it realistically won't come to bite you in a meaningful manner. You're a customer so totally ruining your life would be bad for business. #MEDIA180_F26_HEADLINE

I understand your point, but I think the Internet has had a mostly negative effect on democracy. Although it allows more people to share their opinions, misinformation and algorithms can spread false claims and increase political division. Its hard to trust what is true.

I agree with you on taking down Section 230. The fact that tech companies push toxic content to maximize profits and engagement, but then use Section 230 to dodge all legal accountability. That "structural violence" was built right into their algorithm.

I agree. Also I like that you mentioned filter bubbles because they can negatively affect democracy. When algorithms mainly show people content that supports what they already believe, it limits their exposure to other perspectives and can create more political division.

I feel like the internet has had sort of a positive and negative effect on democracy in our nation. On on end, people are able to spread awareness on issues that otherwise wouldn't get traction, but on the other end, you have people who spread misinformation for monetary gain. #MEDIA180_F26_HEADLINE

Surveillance capitalism is unjustifiable because it violates users' privacy and data. In the lectures we were taught that platforms and apps like Amazon, TikTok, Facebook, etc take our info to personalize the 'experience' for us. Certain things should be kept private!

To add onto your point, the internet is used to rally supporters to a cause. The No Kings protests for example were organized online along with grassroots mobilization. The internet is the central hub for democratic participation for people voice their frustrations
