Surveillance capitalism violates individual privacy by collecting and using user information to benefit corporations, often without direct consent. They profit from this data, but users should be made fully aware of how it is collected and used.

The negatives of the internet on democracy outweigh the positives. The internet, through social media, has created polarizing algorithms that create political echo chambers impeding political discourse. This is a threat to democracy because of the radicalization occurring.

I believe the internet positively impacts democracy by allowing people to express different ideas and opinions. Through counterpublics and the public sphere, people communicate with diverse groups, create solutions, and help marginalized communities embrace their differences. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

Local music scenes can still thrive in the modern streaming era, but they’ll just have to coexist. Streaming/social media allows artists to reach listeners that are beyond their city, and form scenes online. Still, local venues/ communities are a key part of the music space.

The internet’s impact on democracy is neutral because it expands access to decentralized information while also enabling AI‑driven misinformation and fake news of politicians. It increases transparency but spreads false content that can distort elections in the future.

surveillance capitalism is violating an individuals 4th amendment rights. There shall be no forms of exception to study someones personal data or behavior through platform or devices. This gives the government the ability to harvest personal data to use it against users.

Local music can still thrive, but streaming has changed how they grow. Artists used live shows and radio to build audiences. Radios and programming shaped what people heard. Streaming gives people access to more music without owning it, but local spaces still build community.

I think the internet had a positive impact on democracy because it reduced gatekeeping, allowing people to express and share their ideas with a wider audience. The internet increased diversity and helped start grassroot activism, encouraging people to engage in social change. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The internet needs more regulation, but Section 230 should be kept. If platforms were liable for every user post, they'd remove anything slightly controversial for fear of lawsuits. Rules should be able to hold platforms accountable for harm without limiting free speech.

I believe that surveillance capitalism is unethical, and dangerous to internet users. The data that is collected by companies can include sensitive information such as home addresses or credit card numbers, which if leaked can easily put users at risk.

Music scenes (grunge, west-coast rap, etc) are still thriving despite the recent shift from physical media to popular streaming services. Allowing for more control over the music they release and allowing bands to reach a broader audience through promotional content.

Streaming changed how we consume music. Local scenes like grunge and Motown thrived on regional community. Now algorithms dictate hits. It's harder for new artists to build a following when everyone hears the same playlist. It feels like access replaced local identity. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

I believe that the internet overall had a neutral effect on democracy in our nation as it’s easily accessible. While the internet can make people more aware of things, misinformation can often lead to harmful perceptions. So it’s important to be careful about what you see.

Local scenes are not the same as they were in the past. The shift from physical music to streaming has made music easier and faster to share, giving artists more exposure. People can now discover and access music through platforms like Apple Music and TikTok today. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

Music scenes have become a thing of the past. Streaming led to global access, aiding loss of geographic link and popular artists styles dominating. AI music contributes as these styles can be generation. The development of scenes became harder with much less influence.

The internet has been mostly positive for democracy, raising awareness of societal issues and uniting diverse cultures. However, the oligarchy has used it to create deep division, reversing its impact. Ultimately, it hasn't changed democracy itself but is a tool to divide us. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

Streaming has helped local music scenes reach audiences far beyond their original spaces due to the internet. While music is less tied to specific places now, local scenes still exist and can use streaming to grow their influence and introduce their style to the world.

I think surveillance capitalism is a violation of privacy because companies make money off information about us that we don’t always realize we’re giving them. Our searches, interests, and habits shouldn’t automatically become products just because we use the Internet.

Section 230 should be abolished. Platforms must be liable to hide misleading content. Like Deepfakes which is digital editing to change a narrative. People can’t just post anything on social media expecting no repercussions. Like yelling “bomb” at the airport without trouble.

The internet requires more regulation. Section 230 should be abolished because social media platforms have the power to control what is being posted by users. This won’t be detrimental to free speech because there are some things that shouldn’t be for just anyone to see. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The gramophone was significant to US youth culture because music was made more accessible and became a new form of entertainment in the same way that gaming consoles have allowed gamers to befriend people with similar interests. This can be done through e-sports. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME
