Chromosomal defenses turn over much faster than other chromosomal genes. Prophage-encoded defenses are retained more stably than the rest of the prophage. Defenses are also lost faster from chromosomes than from MGEs, consistent with defense outsourcing to MGEs

Within MGEs, anti-defenses show higher loss and copy-number change than defenses. This pattern holds across several system classes, most clearly anti-CBASS and anti-RM

If you have reads that are hitting your target genuine, you could examine where in the genome? E.g. reads hitting MGEs, reps or tRNAs are going to be less believable.

Multiple recent studies in other systems show that ecologically relevant symbiont traits are encoded on MGEs. These dynamics provide a mechanism by which symbiont evolution generates phenotypic differences among host populations. We have exciting ideas about a more specific mechanism, so stay tuned!

Day 1 of #ISPB2026 has come to an end!
Today’s programme included the great talk by Adrián Cazares, followed by sessions on plasmid maintenance, replication and evolution.
Did you meet up with old friends at the get together or did you make some new ones?

In the future, many other characteristics of MGEs (host species partitioning, immunity, etc.) will need to be incorporated to gain a better understanding ✂️

Finally, this study shows that the theoretical framework and tools of community ecology provide a better understanding of plasmid diversity and, more broadly, of MGEs 🦠

If you missed it before, check out Xu’s great work here www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
It answers an important question in the anti-phage field, namely how defence genes not encoded by MGEs are mobilised between bacteria 🧫
Bacteriophages mobilize bacterial defense systems via lateral transduction
Bacteriophages and PICIs spread bacterial defenses via lateral transduction, shaping microbial immunity and pathogen evolution.

Prevalence of Group II Introns in Phage Genomes
Although bacteriophage genomes are under strong selective pressure for high coding density, they are still frequently invaded by mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Group II introns are MGEs that reduce h...

We applied a bacterial GWAS to identify genetic variants in S. aureus associated with differences in bacterial adhesion. The GWAS identified genetic variants in genes encoding known adhesins (clfA, fnbA, fnbB, ebh), other surface factors (spa, sdrH), MGEs, and other loci (csbB, glcA).

This work highlights how interactions between MGEs can produce unique effects where both benefit from their nested existence. Furthermore, we have extended TnpB’s mechanism that sheds light on why TnpB is so successful.
