🌠 Star nurseries may feed cosmic rays

El Sol pudo haberse tragado un planeta más grande que la Tierra en su juventud, y todavía guardaría la evidencia en su interior. Es la propuesta de un estudio publicado el jueves 10 de septiembre en Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS), firmado por el profesor Mutlu Yildiz, de la Universidad de Ege, en Turquía. Con simulaciones de la evolución del Sol, Yildiz halló que el escenario que mejor reproduce las mediciones reales de la estrella incluye la absorción temprana de una super-Tierra de entre cinco y diez veces la masa terrestre. Ese único episodio, sostiene el trabajo, ayudaría a explicar a la vez dos rarezas que los modelos estándar no logran cuadrar: la escasa cantidad de litio en la superficie solar y varias anomalías de su estructura interna. ## El Sol esconde dos rarezas que los modelos no explican bien El interior del Sol se estudia con heliosismología, el análisis de las ondas de sonido que recorren la estrella. Desde hace años, los modelos construidos con la física estándar de la evolución estelar tropiezan con un mismo obstáculo: no consiguen reproducir a la vez la profundidad de la zona de convección solar y la estructura de la velocidad del sonido justo por debajo de ella. A eso se suma otra anomalía conocida: el Sol muestra en su superficie mucho menos litio del que cabría esperar en una estrella de su tamaño. Yildiz se preguntó si esos problemas, tratados por separado durante mucho tiempo, podían compartir una raíz común en la historia química temprana del Sol, y lo expuso así: > Las estrellas jóvenes están rodeadas de discos protoplanetarios, donde cantidades sustanciales de material pueden moverse entre el disco y la estrella. Como los planetas están hechos de un material químicamente distinto al gas del disco, nos preguntamos si la absorción temprana de un planeta pudo dejar una firma química dentro del joven Sol. ## Las simulaciones apuntan a un planeta de cinco a diez veces la masa de la Tierra Para poner a prueba la idea, Yildiz usó MESA, un código de evolución estelar de código abierto, y ensayó distintas formas en que el Sol pudo acumular material a lo largo de su vida. Después comparó cada modelo con las restricciones heliosísmicas y con las abundancias químicas de la superficie solar, y contrastó explicaciones alternativas ligadas a la ecuación de estado, la opacidad y los distintos modos de mezcla turbulenta y convectiva. Ese mismo escenario reproduce a la vez varias mediciones independientes del Sol, incluida su baja proporción de litio. El rango de masa resultó sorprendentemente acotado, algo que Yildiz destacó como uno de los resultados más interesantes del estudio. El modelo añade un matiz llamativo: un cuerpo así podría atravesar las capas exteriores del Sol perdiendo muy poca masa, lo que sugiere que un planeta puede dejar huellas detectables dentro de su estrella mucho después de haber desaparecido. ## Una hipótesis, no una prueba El propio trabajo marca sus límites. Los cálculos refuerzan que el episodio es físicamente plausible, pero no afirman que haya ocurrido: el modelo no necesita que un planeta fuera engullido por completo, y otra causa podría explicar esas discrepancias. Por ahora, la idea se apoya en simulaciones y en rasgos del Sol que siguen sin explicación. La hipótesis conecta con una vieja incógnita: muchos sistemas estelares tienen super-Tierras y el nuestro no. Una investigación de Rebecca Martin y Mario Livio, de 2016, ya había propuesto que una o más super-Tierras pudieron formarse dentro de la órbita de Mercurio y migrar hacia el interior a través del disco de gas, con la posibilidad de terminar cayendo en el joven Sol, aunque ese trabajo no exigía que el planeta fuera finalmente devorado. Yildiz resumió en qué se distingue su aporte: > Nuestro artículo se pregunta si el propio Sol podría conservar evidencia observable de que esa absorción ocurrió de verdad, y creemos que sí. El siguiente paso es ver si esas huellas pueden detectarse de forma independiente. Si algún día esa firma estructural y química se detecta de forma independiente en el Sol, la propuesta dejaría de ser una simulación sugerente para convertirse en un indicio sólido de un choque ocurrido hace miles de millones de años. _Fuentes:_ 1, 2

🔭 Ghost galaxy clusters hide from X-rays

Sussex astronomers found 12 galaxy clusters missing from X-ray scans. Other telescopes confirmed 5 do have hot gas, so they exist but were missed, and no one knows why the rest stay invisible.
