I'm not 100% sure how their publicly available MPAS (what Pivotal Weather calls "GSL MPAS-RFFSA") compares to what's been run in the SFE. @clarkevanswx.github.io probably knows.

MPAS_RRFSA and other variants of that name are cold-started forecasts using RRFSv1 for initial conditions. The fully cycled RRFSv2x system with MPAS and JEDI is not currently publicly available while it undergoes continued (and often rapid) development.

The context is important. Greenpeace have done this in response to these mpas being designated 10,15, 20 years ago (amd a few even longer) and then no measures were brought in. 2 years ago the uk government announced it would ban bottom trawling in 41 mpas - since then they have done nothing.

Part 2 is compares the 2 models in the Gulf of Mexico. Short story is that some eddy activity in the open Gulf shows up in MPAS-O, but it can’t quite get the nearshore soup dynamics that we see in ROMS right. Many reasons for this, one of which is impact of the GIANT RIVER pouring into the Gulf

While I'm very excited for an operational single-model convection allowing ensemble, I don't understand why RRFS/REFS had to be made operational before the mpas version was ready to go.

Despite talks last month failing to deliver any new marine protected areas, hopes are high amongst CCAMLR members that 2027 could see the deadlock broken and safeguards for Antarctica expand.

Are we on the cusp of actually protecting Antarctica?
Last month’s talks fell short of what experts hoped for, but there is now real momentum for a historic agreement next year.  New protected marine areas (MPAs) and better management of Antarctica’s kri...

Part 1 introduces the comparison between the Dept of Energy’s global ocean model (MPAS-O) that has an unstructured (non-rectangular) grid with well-known regional model ROMS. Tested both from 10 km to 100 meters, got similar results b/t models, and got probably the coolest figure I’ve ever made
November 3, 2026 at 9:09 PM
Quick aside on MPAS-O, which many folks may not know exists, the hexagonal mesh is useful for getting more flexibility wherever you might want better model resolution. As to why the DOE is doing global modeling anyway, consider that this is one of its nice public facing uses (vs research on 🍄☁️)

After visiting Germany's Wattenmeer MPA with @blueactionfund.org last month, I was shocked to learn that fishing effort (by BOTTOM TRAWLING of all) in the MPA was twice as high as outside 👀

EU auditors: Europe fails to protect MPAs; unlikely to meet 2030 conservation targets
In a new report, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) found that the European Union (E.U.) is unlikely to meet its 2030 marine conservation goals and that it’s failing to effectively protect the marine protected areas (MPAs) it has already established. “The E.U. has made some progress in designating marine protected areas, but our audit shows that the true challenge is turning designation into actual protection. Turning political ambition into tangible results for marine ecosystems will require faster action, applicable protective measures, and a more coherent network across the E.U.’s seas,” ECA Member Iliana Ivanova, who led the audit, said in a release. “To ensure that marine protected areas function effectively, we need the European Commission and member states to join forces, as well as engagement with local stakeholders.” Under its biodiversity strategy for 2030, the E.U. has set an ambitious goal of protecting 30 percent of its marine waters by 2030, with 10 percent of that area under strict protection. While the bloc has tripled the area covered by MPAs over the last 15 years, the ECA’s report found that only 13.7 percent of marine waters are currently designated as protected, and only 1 percent is under strict protection...

So, like all good science, we will continue to argue this in the court of public opinion as well as in the scientific literature

Do large MPAs benefit fisheries?

Yes, but the answers are complicated

CCAMLR again fails to reach agreement on krill conservation measures
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) has once again closed its annual meeting without any krill conservation measures. Ahead of the annual meeting, multiple NGOs were pushing for the members states of CCAMLR to establish a marine protected area (MPA) in the Antarctic Ocean, adopt precautionary krill fishery management measures, and develop a roadmap to more MPAs by 2030. The regional fishery management organization (RFMO) had been working to reach a consensus to set quotas for krill but has failed to do so in one of the key krill-fishing areas of the Antarctic Ocean, Zone 48.1, despite attempting it for multiple years. The limits for Zone 48.1 would have capped krill fishing in the area to 395,000 metric tons (MT) and replaced a safeguard that lapsed in 2024 that was intended to spread krill fishing effort to more areas of the Antarctic Ocean. Despite the calls from NGOs and another two weeks of negotiations, CCAMLR failed to enact an MPA, or establish any safeguards, for the third year in a row. "CCAMLR was created to conserve Antarctic marine life, and yet, year after year, it has not delivered on its conservation mandate,” Blue Marine Foundation...

A damning new European Court of Auditors report confirms the EU is failing its Marine Protected Areas- protected on paper, not in the water.

➡️ Just 1% of EU seas are strictly protected
➡️ Fishing is 72% higher inside Natura 2000 sites, the world’s largest network of marine protected areas.
