Ontario's Boreal Forest Area Larger Than Toronto to Receive Protection from Development
A significant portion of Ontario's northern boreal forest, spanning 814 square kilometres and larger than the city of Toronto, is set to be protected from industrial development. The Nature Conservancy of Canada has acquired this land south of Kapuskasing, previously owned by a company that sold carbon offset credits. The non-profit organization states that where the landscape remains healthy and free of vulnerable species, limited recreational activities such as hiking and paddling may continue under provincial regulations. The federal government is contributing $13 million to the project, part of a total $64-million investment from both public and private sources. This announcement precedes the upcoming United Nations biodiversity summit, where global conservation efforts will be a key topic. The initiative aligns with Canada's broader environmental strategy, which includes a $3.8-billion nature protection plan unveiled earlier this year. This strategy aims to address the gap identified by the federal environmental watchdog, which found Canada was more than one million square kilometres short of its 2025 target to protect 25 per cent of its lands and inland waters. The protected area includes boreal forest and peatlands, critical ecosystems that support biodiversity and carbon sequestration. The project underscores Canada's commitment to meeting international conservation goals and highlights the importance of preserving natural habitats in the face of increasing environmental pressures. The Nature Conservancy of Canada emphasizes that the protection will not hinder all human activities, allowing for sustainable use where appropriate. This approach balances ecological preservation with community needs, ensuring that local residents and visitors can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of the region while safeguarding its long-term health.
