Fake Marvell RAID Installer Uses Microsoft-Signed MSBuild to Deploy Memory-Resident Malware and DLL-Sideloading Kits + Video
Introduction: Trusted Software Becomes the Attackers’ Disguise Cybercriminals are increasingly abusing legitimate, digitally signed Microsoft components to make malicious software appear trustworthy. A newly reported campaign demonstrates how attackers can exploit that trust through a fake Marvell RAID installer, combining a tampered .NET library, renamed Microsoft-signed MSBuild, in-memory payload execution, and multiple DLL-sideloading toolkits. The technique is particularly concerning because the presence of a valid Microsoft digital signature does not guarantee that an installer or the complete execution chain is legitimate.

For what it's worth I'm 99% sure that generating the solution is why VS was using the wrong compiler, because without MSBuild support files/flagtables etc for other compilers, sln files tend to assume you're just using cl

It's a plain MSBuild Copy task: nothing is downloaded, and no code runs. It writes nothing on the CI systems it detects, and one property in your project file turns it off. Every C# sample in the skill has to match one compiled in the package's own tests, so the guidance can't drift.

Sometimes it's more than worth drilling down into familiar tools that have been around as long as we've been building Windows code, because it turns out there's a lot of interesting infrastructure under the hood of tools like MS Build.

MSBuild is more powerful than you might think, as it’s usually hidden behind an IDE. Here’s a peek behind the curtain.

The headless Linux assumption breaks fast on desktop apps: signing, installers and UI tests all want the real OS. A plain Actions workflow calling the CLI is less shiny, but it keeps the agent inside the build you already trust. How does Copilot CLI cope with MSBuild errors?

I spent nearly a decade of my life as a professional Java developer fighting with Maven.

I've spent about two hours in total as a gamer who maintains two tiny C# mods for Unity based video games fighting with MSBuild.

I have an order of magnitude more PTSD from the latter than I have from the […]

Easy hunts: RuntimeBroker.exe in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\RuntimeBrokers, or vshost*.exe with a .config next to it off a dev box. If your users do not build code, MSBuild does not need to run there.
