"But people do stuff in hours with AI that used to take weeks! How can you say it doesn't increase productivity?!?" Answer: true productivity is about creating economic value, not simply getting tasks done quickly. AI is good at the latter but not the former (as I wrote for @hardresetmedia.com ).

The guiding assumption of the AI boom is that generative AI will massively increase productivity, particularly by automating tasks typically performed by white-collar workers. But AI had no discernible impact on productivity in 2025 or the first half of 2026.

New Zealanders work 34.2 hours a week. The OECD average is 31.9. We produce $68 of output an hour; they produce $85. That's from the Productivity Commission's 2021 scorecard. In 2024 the coalition shut the Productivity Commission down. #nzpol

Cool kind of citizen-science on carbon removal here. one detail that stuck out:

"Our study shows that if we were to implement regenerative row cropping systems on a national scale, that it represents the best climate solution currently available. And farmers don’t lose money or productivity."
Researchers reported that advanced regenerative farms stored nearly 40% more carbon in soil compared to the conventional farm controls and if all field crops used these methods, the equivalent of 1.5 years of US greenhouse gas emissions could be stored in soil. 🌎🌱

From the OBR report:

"If productivity growth were 0.5 percentage points higher or lower than forecast, borrowing could reach £50 billion lower or £40 billion higher."

Always worth remembering how sensitive these forecasts are to small changes.
