Just a 938 mb low in the western Aleutian Islands. The latest surface obs from Shemya has 942.5 mb MSLP. @alaskawx.bsky.social

For the first time since records began in 1950, France’s multi-week national MSLP has dropped below 1000 hPa. The persistence of this low-pressure pattern across western Europe in recent weeks has been nothing short of historic.

Friday 7pm Fairbanks altimeter setting up to 31.00 inches (MSLP 1051.8 hPa). Tanana altimeter at 31.03 inches (MSLP 1052.2). By Saturday morning eastern Interior Alaska and central Yukon Territory will be up over 1060 hPa. #akwx

We just had two recon flights near-simultaneously cross Melissa's center - interestingly both recorded slightly different minimum MSLP estimates, though center dropsondes will yield more exact min MSLP values.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong appear to have potentially set a local ERA5 record (1950-2024) for lowest MSLP for the month of October:

Technical note — neither ICON nor the AIFS had many members identify Tropical Storm Lorenzo with my strictly MSLP-based algorithm, so I switched to a 10m vorticity & MSLP tracking algorithm. This now picks up much more members than the previous method.

Waiting on a dropsonde to confirm, but Melissa is most certainly below 900 hPa right now.

Tragically we are about to witness the 2nd or 1st deepest Atlantic hurricane landfall by min MSLP on record in Jamaica.

Due to cuts and moves to eliminate library and archive functions within the Fed, and recent silencing of NCEI regarding monthly climate trends, I’ve been accelerating work on my monthly MSLP database(s) while I can.

It would be shortsighted not to do so.

An exceptionally strong high pressure of 1050 hPa is forecast to set up over the Northeast US & SE Canada on Saturday in the wake of yesterday’s cyclone.

This is expected to easily break December MSLP ERA5 records (1950-present):

MSLP
Two charts, less than 48 hours apart, one with hardly an isobar on it, the other with dozens.
That's one of the reasons why weather is so endlessly fascinating. 🙂

The rapid deepening of Storm Amy has begun.

Over the next hours, the storm will travel across the jet stream and move to the left exit region of the jet stream where the most explosive deepening will take place.

A baroclinic wave in the North Pacific embedded in a strong jet streak interacting with a potent short-wavelength trough will result in explosive cyclogenesis in the NE Pacific on Tuesday.

With models showing MSLP in the 940s hPa, this may challenge for the deepest cyclone on record in the region.

The ongoing USAF mission is going in for another pass into Melissa - given steady pressure falls over the last few passes, there is a non-zero chance its minimum MSLP may reach or fall below 900 hPa in this mission.

I added new tools to PolarWx to make it easier to compare MSLP & 500mb heights for different models, listed under the "comparison" dataset.

I also brought back the model vs. ensemble plots, showing where the ECMWF & GFS rank relative to the EPS & GEFS:

Extreme, near record high MSLP this morning across the Northeast.

NYS Mesonet sites reporting widespread values over 1050 hPa, with one site (Old Forge) at 1053 hPa.

Kuujjuarapik & La Grande IV sites in Quebec set Dec low pressure records this morning when their MSLP fell into the low to mid 960s hPa.

Inukjuak’s MSLP fell to 955.7 hPa, an all-time record. POR starts in 1937.

The cyclone’s CP fell to 951 hPa at 15z, before moving west into Hudson Bay.

Erin's inner core continued to further contract overnight with a small warm eye clearing out, and recon observations indicate minimum MSLP is decreasing rapidly at an approximate rate of 4.7 hPa/hour. The very latest recon pass suggests this rapid deepening is still ongoing.

Storm Bert now forecast by @metoffice.bsky.social to deepen to 937 hPa by 12Z Saturday west of Britain & Ireland. Per ERA5 1950-2023 maps by @burgwx.bsky.social, looks close to/exceeding (?) record minimum MSLP in November in this region arctic.som.ou.edu/tburg/produc...

October 27 11am ET: The current minimum central pressure of #Melissa is down to 908 millibars. This is the lowest MSLP in the Atlantic at such a late date in calendar year on record; surpassing Mitch (Oct 27, 1999) at 910 millibars.
