I encourage the use of LibreOffice / OpenOffice, but its not nothing that the great majority of workspaces are tied to MSOffice and MS have done nothing but make their products uselessly worse for years

I used OpenOffice many many years ago, and back when I switched to MSOffice, it was because I needed it for interoperability with my publisher, but I will figure out how to make this shit work.

Why is Microsoft Office still so widely-used in spite of it being paid software? All desktop platforms have builds for LibreOffice, which contains perfectly good Word, Excel, and PowerPoint alternatives (Writer, Calc, and Impress). They even support the MSOffice file formats.

I switched to Qwant a few months ago. Replaced gmail with ProtonMail and MSOffice suite with LibreOffice. All free. So why not give them a try also!

having said that the real challenges for Linux remain gaming (tho Valve made huge strides there) and MSOffice compatibility (which still requires more elbow grease than Bob from accounting is ready to put in)

this one is a solid additional MSOffice programme pre-CoPilot, like Forms or Visio. Not used by everyone, but does a specific job reliably most of the time and plays well with everything else.

As much as I enjoy Notepad++, LibreOffice is definitely the MSOffice replacement. Same WYSIWYG interface with all the bells and whistles for formatting built in.

If you use MSOffice and can do this I encourage you to opt for the AI free version. Not only are you saving money but hopefully it sends a message that AI doesn’t need to be forced on people.
Fascinating. Microsoft emailed me to say it was raising the price of Microsoft 365, but when i went to cancel it offered me me the old price — without all the AI bullshit.

If AI coding is inevitable future, how come no one seems concerned with "Claude code me an open source replacement for the entire msoffice suite"

gdocs+libreoffice enjoyer here: msoffice is an extremely complex beast of a software, and has a lot of unique functionality, tho most are obscure.
gdocs also has its own formula and script syntax, making it hard to transfer knowledge.
I don't use msoffice but I admit it's the most featureful.
