Prescribed fire is widely used by land managers to reduce wildfire risk and promote biodiversity. While the effects of fire on aboveground processes are well understood, much less is known about how repeated burning influences soil biological properties—including the functional role that soil microorganisms play in nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas production. We addressed this gap by studying soils from the Albany Pine Bush, a rare and endangered ecosystem that has experienced regular prescribed fires for 30 years. Long-term fire management significantly altered soil chemistry, specifically lowering the amount of nitrogen in the soil. In addition, we found that fire management decreased the genetic potential of the soil microbial community to produce nitrogen oxides—potent contributors to climate change. Thus, prescribed fire’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions may involve a complex relationship between direct fire-driven emissions, increased fire resilience of promoted vegetation, and—as suggested by our results—the reduced ability of soil microbes to produce greenhouse gases.

Isoprenoid quinones are small electron-carrying molecules found in the membranes of organisms that produce energy through photosynthesis or respiration and participate in other important cellular processes. Recent advances in the characterization of their biosynthesis pathways enable their automated annotation from genome analyses. In this article, we performed the genomic analysis of over 26,000 cultured and uncultured bacteria, which was complemented by literature data compiled on over 6,000 cultured bacteria. This enabled us to provide an unprecedented overview of quinone distribution across the bacterial diversity. Creating such a comprehensive data set revealed new information about quinone distribution and evolutionary paths and will facilitate future exploration of various aspects of quinone biology, including their role in the evolution and diversification of bacterial metabolism.

MSYS isn’t recommended for producing binaries, since they rely on the posix emulation layer. They’re less portable and you also pay a performance penalty. But since GHC doesn’t really pick the C compiler from that toolchain anyway, you end up with a mix of two environments. It is probably largely safe, since MSYS is mostly meant for access to unix tools. But in case you want to link to, say, libarchive or other things, I can’t imagine that this is going to work well.

Oxygen is one of the most important environmental variables affecting microbial activity and composition, but is often difficult to measure in situ. We developed a tool, OxyMetaG, that leverages differences in bacterial gene content across known aerobic and anaerobic taxa to predict the oxygen level of a given sample directly from shotgun metagenomic reads. OxyMetaG works on samples with low sequencing depth and avoids computationally expensive genome assembly, which often captures only a fraction of the microbial community in a given environment. With OxyMetaG, bacteria can be used as bioindicators of oxygen availability over broader time scales than just a single measurement and provide crucial environmental context in cases where oxygen has not been or cannot be measured. OxyMetaG is publicly available and can be used to answer a wide variety of ecological questions in both environmental and host-associated systems.
