On some GPUs (eg GCN/RDNA) 24bit integer muls/mads are 4x faster than 32bit ones. 24bit instructions are not exposed in HLSL/GLSL but you can encourage the compiler to use the 24bit intrinsics by zeroing the 8 most significant bits, if the range allows it, for faster integer muls/mads.

instead of doing a 4x4 matrix multiply then divide by w and multiply by size (21 muls) i switched to a view matrix, view transform the position, then project to the screen manually (13 muls) and use view distance instead of depth since i don't care

and it now runs in about 2/3rds the time :D

among quite a few other extremely weird (for the time) things were the muls, or half-dwarves. "why's that weird? we're all used to half-elves."

so the thing with muls is their name is a play on mule and and if you want to guess why grab your worst assumptions and run with them.

Other mixes were explored post Gygax to mixed results. Muls (human x dwarf) were racist AF. The Elf x Gnome never got stats.
