2 years ago today, I was lucky to spend an hour with this male #Shoebill in Mabamba Swamp, #Uganda. I watched him hunt, preening & spreading his huge wings out & just standing (as they do) waiting for prey. I will never forget that hour.

A young Shoebill Stork - prehistoric and awesome!

Utterly unique bird that makes up its own family. The plumage is uniformly gray in adults and brownish in immatures. Structure is stork-like overall, but with a thick neck and massive hooked bill. In flight, which is sometimes quite high, the long legs trail. Found in deep marshes, especially papyrus swamp. Usually alone or in pairs.

Unusual Sightings; Shoebill are known to prefer to live alone. Even hunting is done separately, and the male and female are only seen together during mating season!

Distinctive gull. Breeding adults have a gray hood, pale eyes, and a red bill and legs. The back is medium gray and the wings have extensively dark flight feathers. Loses the gray hood in the nonbreeding season which is replaced by a dark cheek spot, while juveniles have paler bills and variably brown mottled wings and back.

The Shoebill can be found in freshwater swamps in Africa from South Sudan to Zambia. The shoebill is classified as Vulnerable, meaning the species is at high risk of becoming extinct. Estimates suggest there are only between 3,300 and 5,300 mature individuals left in the wild, and populations are on the decline. Their future is in jeopardy due to hunting, nesting disturbance, habitat loss, and drought caused by climate change. Shoebills are also threatened by illegal live bird trade, with high mortality during capture, transit, and captivity.
