Did I mention we went to Uganda in June!! Impossible to convey the beauty and variety of wildlife, habitats and scenery we saw in three weeks, the forests, savannas, wetlands, gorillas, wonderful birds, no amount of sets of four photos would be enough but I must share something so here are a few.
A juvenile Shoebill, an enormous prehistoric-looking grey stork-like bird with a huge boat-shaped bill, piercing yellow eyes and a little tuft of feathers at the back of its head. We had incredibly close views at Mabamba Swamp, it wasn't afraid of us and it came very close to our boat. A Papyrus Gonolek, which is black on its back and wings, bright red/orange underneath and has a golden cap. The bird is crouched in a display pose and has its beak open, calling. It is perched among papyrus plants which are huge grasses with a tuft at the top, which form their own habitat, papyrus swamp, which is where this bird lives. Queen Elizabeth National Park. One of the many incredible pieces of lichen I found that had fallen from trees. This one is green with large round rust-coloured reproductive bodies which project from the main body of the lichen a bit like suckers on the bottom of an octopus. There is a dark green liverwort intertwined. We had a tight itinerary and I didn't have time to look as much as I wanted at lichens or even plants but there were times I refused to resist! Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. A leopard! It is climbing slowly out of a tree, looking towards the camera, the back half of its body still in its resting place in the fork of a tree and the two front paws have just touched down on a lower branch. A curly tail sticks out on the left of the tree. Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Mabamba Bay, on Lake Victoria, is a globally recognised Important Bird Area, in which shoebills, along with blue swallows and papyrus gonoleks, are protected.

2 years ago today, I was lucky to spend an hour with this male #Shoebill in Mabamba Swamp, #Uganda. I watched him hunt, preening & spreading his huge wings out & just standing (as they do) waiting for prey. I will never forget that hour.
