The machair (dune grassland) by the mouth of a small river. As typical in the summer the machair is covered in short green grass and small wildflowers. By the river mouth is visible a sandy beach with some small cliffs at its far side. Above is a blue sky with scattered white clouds.

I spent two winter months cycling and wild camping the length of the Outer Hebrides from Barra to Lewis, a rich time of painting. This watercolour sketch shows the distant low Atlantic tide and building dark cloud across the machair grassland on Benbecula’s west coast. Painted in yellow ochre, burnt umber, raw umber and ultramarine blue.
